I have a question on TUBES... I read on this site under Ar Discussions FAQ & General Information Resource. That Mil-Spec are 1.148" outer diameter: Commercial are 1.168" outer diameter. Are these set in stone. Also same article it states that Mil-Spec has more threads. So I guess Commercial screws right to end? The main reason I bring this up is, I measured mine it is 1.179" or 29.83 mm It was on lower when I bought it. $ pos. Plain Jane. I was going to buy new stock not tube. Now I don't know which way to go. Any insite would be of great Help. Thanks David C.

| It is not unusual to see a variance like that in a buffer tube. After all it is only 1/100th of an inch. In fact it may give you a rattle free stock...or not. But the bottom line is....look at the "loose stock" threads and you'll see that some are tight, some are not, showing that small variances do exist. |

Buy the stock and you'll know what your next step is. Seriously, it depends on the stock whether it will fit or not. I recently purchased an LMT stock and I already had a CMT tube. It's a VERY snug fit! There is just no damn way a "milspec" stock will fit on your current tube. Again, that's only if you buy something like an LMT or VLTOR stock. So what stock are you looking at buying? |

This is one reason that i use mil-spec tubes only. They are consistent in OD. The other reason to use mil-spec is the 7000 series Al. Most commercial tubes are made out of 6000 Al. Swapping out tubes is cheap. Its the stock that costs. My vote is swallow the cost and go mil-spec. |
No it doesn't say that. What is says is "(more surface area of the threads engage the receiver)." The difference is in the number of threads, but how the threads are cut and how they interface with the threads in the receiver. |
