Never owned an AR & have only shot one!  But I've gotta have one even at the ripe old age of 68!  Will be used for all around purposes; plinking, shorter range varmints, self defense if ever required.  I shoot left handed (blind in right eye), so originally thought  of buying Stag Model 3L for around $700.  Then considered Bushmaster O.R.C. for around $750 and Predator for around $950.  Then I noticed an ArmaLite M-15A4 (T) with stainless (triple lapped) match barrel (16"), Alostyr fiber quad handguard, collapsing buttstock, & new generation III two-stage trigger for about $980.  All these are new rifles.  The first (3) all have regular chrome lined barrels.  Will be using with optics only; scope and red dot, holosight, etc.  May also consider others.  Also can get a Smith M&P 15T for around $1150.  Trying to stay under $1000.  Not enough knowledge yet to build one.  Any help considering quality and features on above would be much appreciated.

If i was a southpaw I would probably go with Stag.  They are quality rifles and have the lefthanded versions.  Very good value.

I'd still get one with sights, this carbine should be fine for general fun shooting, short range coyote work and dispatching any ne'er do wells.

I think the predator has a heavier barrel, not worth the weight if you are going to use a red dot in my opinion. I think the ORC is basically the same as the one I listed above except for the sights.

Armalite makes very accurate ARs, make sure the gas block on the front of the barrel is not crooked before you buy it.

+1 for what Aimless said about the Bushmaster M4A3.

I've had mine now for around two years and have yet to run into any problems. AIM has one for $880 shipped.

Dont know enough about the Smith Mp, they havent been on the market long enough for me, I like them to be out there for a while before spending $1k on anything (they make fine pistols of course) . Go with RRA for price and excellent quality. Go with Bushmaster (a little more expensive) for more accuracy (only my experience...) and unfailing durability. We have both, and you cant go wrong with either.
i cant say much for the others, I have heard alot of good stuff about the armalite, but cant say anything from experience. I am on my second bushmater, and other than the trigger (scratchy pull, nice break) its perfect for defense and 100 yd plinking. I think the predator is a little heavy in the barrel department. good luck .

It will be easer to shoot the stag. If you go with there left hand set up. I would go with a 16in Gov. or M4 type barrel. Most of there Barrels are 1/9. Nice compromise. For light 55gr. Surplus but still can shoot up to 65gr rounds for longer range. I would go with a flat top. For optics. And get a carrey handle or a good BUIS. Like the Larue or a Troy. Light easy to shoot all round Carbine. What the Ar is ment to be. And south paw frendly.

Other then southpaw desighn, how does it shoot? at 100-200 yds?
i handled one at a gun show a couple of weeks ago, and was very impressed for the price (low $700's i think...) i have a trade in AR, and am thinking of trading it in on a stag and drawing a little boot, to have enough money for accesories. it may sound trivial for a 16" rifle, but one of my concerns is accuracy on the range, as i also do alot of hunting (deer & hogs to armadillos) with my AR's.
any input on the stags is greatly appreciated..
