| I read in a thread here a few weeks ago, and for the life of me I can't find the thread, that one manufacturer overbored their barrels prior to chrome lining, and achieved exceptional accuracy. Which make was/is it? |
From talking personally with Denny about it, I have an idea, but I will refrain from commenting. Just ask Denny, he will give you the "yes" answer you are looking for. |
Yes. Other makers will have the barrel etched before chroming. It's harder to be consistent when you etch and then deposit chrome than when you start oversize and only deposit chrome. Therefore, by reducing the number of processes that the bore goes through, it's possible to be more consistent and therefore more accurate. That's part of what makes a GTS or LMT barrel worth the extra money you pay for them. |
Sorry, I have been real busy and not on the board a lot. Thank Aimless for pointing me to this thread. In answer, yes I use Rock Creek 4150 CMV barrel blanks as the basis of my Operator Barrels and the soon to be finished 12.5" version of the Operator. The barrels and chambers are cut oversize for the chrome plating. These are the same blanks and process used by LMT. I felt the electro polishing degraded the rifling and had a negative effect on accuracy so I started down this road. I am very glad I did. The barrels have proven themselves. I use a lot of LMT uppers personally and have always been impressed with their accuracy. In the Operator line I wanted a Middy with more heft to better handle heat and also less POI shift for my silencers. I also wanted park under the front sight bases. We park the barrels in house with a rich black parkerizing. Every Operator is heat stress releived and MPI'd. All are M4 ramped with true M4 barrel extensions. They also have taper pinned "F" height sight bases. Thanks to Randall for covering the bases for me. He always has the good scoop and thanks Randall for handling the majority of the inquiries. Thanks to both Randall & Denny for answering my question. I recently finished a nice build centered around an Operator barrel. Now I just need a chance to get to the range. |
| Is there a place that sells just the LMT barrels? The only thing I have found are complete LMT uppers. I'm planning to get a CMMG barrel but if I can find an LMT barrel for a decent price I may go that rout unless the accuracy difference between the two are negligible. |

I am often overly bored. BTW my Denny's Operator is excellent. My experience has been, it's possible to get a chromelined barrel from Colt/Shaw that is very accurate, but it is a crapshoot. Denny's/LMT/Rock is more LIKELY to be an especially sweet shooter. Hope I didn't go overboard in my praise. |

I don't keep track of Denny's different models, but he must have a 14.5" barrel of some sort and it would most likely be made this way. ALL LMT chrome lined barrels are most likely made the same way so YES, they offer one. |
