Has anyone ever developed a sort of general maintenance guide for the AR?

'After 'X' # of rounds, replace/check this part' for example?

Here's my guide.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Run it till it stops.

I generally live like that to. I would however like to know what parts to expect to replace first.

(Sort of how you can prepare for and be ready to change the oil after a while, or replace tires every X # of miles...)

Gas rings and extractor springs are the only things that come to mind. They should be good for at least 5000 rounds. With the price of ammo, that will be a long time for the average AR owner.

Keep a spare complete bolt.  Swap bolts when you have a failure.  That is all the replacement parts you will ever need.  If you want a warm fuzzy swap bolts at 5000 rounds and keep the used bolt as the new spare bolt.
