What kind of buffer should I use for a 16" mid-length with a collapsable stock?

Just use a standard Carbine buffer. A heavy buffer would be OK, but is not necessary.

CAR buffer or, i'd opt for the H-buffer

just make sure it works in your rifle

i would vote for the H buffer.

I run a standard carbine buffer; but nothing heavier than an H-buffer IMO.

It depends on a lot of factors - how is your gas port cut, how new is the carbine, how old is the spring... but generally I don't find my midlengths run well with the heavier buffers like 9mm or MGI.

My 9mm buffer works fine w/ my 16" midlength, suppressed and un-suppressed.
It also works fine with my 20" upper.  No issues here.

I use 9mm buffers in my 14.5" CAR's & right now I have a MGI buffer in my 16" midlength.

Amazing piece of gear.  I keep a standard buffer around all the time too, just in case physics wants to challenge my logic in AR construction.

9mm buffer in my 16'' middy and its running like a champ.

What is the benefit of using a 9mm buffer?

It's heavier, thus slowing down the cycling.

That said, I use a regular carbine buffer in my middy.  RRA Lower, Sabre upper.

How is a 9mm buffer different from a H buffer?

It is around twice as heavy... 7oz IIRC

Mine will function OK with a regular CAR buffer, but with ejection to about the 1:30 position (suggesting the bolt velocity is a bit on the high side). In the end, I opted for an H buffer to get the 3 o'clock ejection pattern I am more comfortable with. My middy carbine in this configuration has NEVER malfunctioned.

An RRA 9mm buffer is around 5.5oz, just slightly heavier than a rifle buffer which is 5.2oz.
