I know that the Matech is the standard issue BIS on Army rifles and carbines but I've seen this type (pictured below) on many Army weapons leading me to believe it's more than just individual unit purchase equipment. Anyone know exactly what type it is:

Looks like a GG&G flip-up. I too have seen them on M4's, but not nearly as prevalent as the Matech. I believe the .mil was also using Knight's 300m flip-up, mainly before the Matechs became "mainstream".

ETA---WTF is up with the 100mph tape on the rear of that troop's lower?

Looks like MidWest Industries BUIS or GG&G BUIS,

I'm no BUIS expert, but that's my guess.

Midwest Industries MCT (ERS)?

ETA: I'm quite sure it's a GG&G BUIS

The tape for a tape switch for a light, or something, I forget without looking at the whole photo, but you can see the wire under the ejection port cover.  Now, why the soldier put it there, I haven't a clue, because it must make it awful irritating to clean the weapon.

Yep, looks like a GG&G. Interesting to note the CAR stock as well.

Some guys put their tape switches on the side of the lower...just personal preference.

Certainly they do, and you put it where you are most comfortable, but as an individual, and certain that soldier's squad leader should have raised an eyebrow, and put a kibosh on taping the upper and lower together, and covering the takedown pin on a combat weapon, in of all places, Iraq, where weapons maintenance is critical.

That being said, it could be a temporary thing, for that particular mission, ect.

GG&G BUIS, and there several reasons I can think of why he might tape the weapon.  I doubt its anything that he leaves that way.

Thanks guys, I did compare it to a MI BUIS but it's definitely the GG&G.
