Okay, I'm getting ready to order the headspace gauges from Bushmaster. But... I'm not sure what I'm going to be able to do with them. I feel stupid here but I read quite a bit that I should get these. Can anyone please help me? Thanks in advance. |
your going to check your bolt headspace with them Easiest to do with the barrel out of the reciever. GO - bolt should rotate and fully lock. NO GO - bolt will not lock up fully. If both these things happen your good to go. If not there are issues. Most of us here are not setup for changing any headspace issues if they arrive short of just trying different bolts. My bet is you will never have an issue with the AR Clean your guages, the chamber and disassemble the bolt and clean the bolt face before checking it. Be carefull with your guages and keep them clean and oiled and in the containers when not in use. The smallest nick, ding or crud or rust can knock them out of whack. These are standarized measureing tools that are precision built to extream tolerances. . |
If you have to ask what they're for, you don't have any reason to own headspace gauges. The only people who have proper reason to own these are those who assemble several uppers each year, or who regularly swap the bolts among a pool of uppers. |

So, I guess you have never bought anything you don't need or hardly use? Actually I've decided that I was going to stop spending a ton of money on Gunsmithing when there are things that I can do myself. I've been a home mechanic for quite a while and had to purchase items that I wasn't sure what to do with but once a nice person shared their experience with me, I was able to use them quite often and with excellent results. Thanks everybody for your help! |
Really? I have a number of tools in my toolboxes that I rarely use, should I throw them away? Maybe instead of dogging the OP, you could of said something about building his own? |

Maybe what I should have asked: Okay, I use the gauges and I end up with a NO GO situation... what next? New bolt? New Barrel? Etc... I'm not trying to sound stupid or get someone here to treat me like an idiot... just wanted to know what I'm going to be able to do. Thanks everybody for all of your input so far, it has been real helpful. he |
