Can anyone suggest a good set of beefy rings for a flattop that are high and don't cost too much? LaRue has a set that would be perfect, but are way, way over priced (Holy Mother of God, do they come with a scope??)

I found this:

http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/productdetail.aspx?p=1413&s=

But they are discontinued.

I'm looking to spend around $100 or less, and I need the base of the scope tube to be 1" from the top of the rail.

Apparently you haven't seen the scopes that get mounted in LaRue mounts. A high quality mount is cheap insurance for a high quality scope.

With that said, since cheap seems to be your goal instead of quality-the Armalite and Rock River mounts work pretty good for the money (roughly $100-$120).

Leupold sells a mount for a 1" dia scope they call "very high" which is 1.4" from the CL of the mount to the base of the flat top.  Cost: $130. Made of steel with a black matt finish, and very robust, although nothing fancy. Believe they have the same thing for a 30mm dia. scope tube.  Couldn't find anything else cheaper that was high enough to see over the AR front sight.  Overpriced, but what's the alternative?

Larue makes the best stuff available but I feel your pain with the price.

Check out Armalite's website. They sell a few different mounts & rings. also opticsplanet.com & cabelas.com    Good luck.

Try Burris Tactical Rings, Under $50

I have Larue rings and Badger Ordinance rings. I have tried the less pricey rings and had some luck, but much like an optic you get what you pay for. It's painful to pay for that gear sometimes, $1200 scope, but I have chased problems with rifles for sometimes weeks only to find out the lower cost rings or scopes were the issue.

Armalite has a one-piece mount and ring set that not only puts the centerline of the scope at the same height as iron sights, but also gives the correct amount of fwd offset to give adequate eye relief.  It is available in 1" and 30 mm versions.

I highly recommend it.

+1

The Armalite mount is in my opinion a great balance between quality and price - assuming your scope can be mounted far enough forward for proper eye relief.  For some scope, you may want to step up to the more pricey LaRue mount.

But I am very satisfied with my Armalite mount.

What is the difference in height between the armalite and Larue SPR mounts?

I'm looking at buying a SWFA super sniper 10x42 and worry that it won't clear my ARMS 40 buis if I don't get the right mount.

I had kind of resigned myself to saving for the LaRue, but I wouln't mind saving some money if the armalite will work for both height and eye relief.

Also take a look at Warne rings, I have had great success with them!
