I'm thinking of getting an M4 type AR-15 in the near future and am wondering how the various brands compare. I've looked at Bushmaster, RRA, and DPMS so far. They all seemed to be about the same quality. Are there any brands to avoid ??

BTW, I'm looking for a complete rifle, not a parts gun. Thanks

If price isn't an issue, go with an LMT for ~ $1000 built, or a Colt 6920 for ~$1200-1300 (if you can find one).  Outside of that, Bushmaster is probably going to be the easiest to find in addition to being a totally decent weapon.

Yes, get an LMT upper + any quality lower and you're set.

Id have to say DPMS as ive had nothing but excellence from mine(CAR-15)but as flyboy1910 said, bushmaster, armalite, and of course colt are good rifles also.

I just fired my LMT for the first time Sunday.  Defender SOPMOD lower, 16" upper with LMT BCG and LMT BUIS and EOtech.  Fired over 400 rounds of Radway Green 92 and LC 06 M855.  Not a single stoppage.  Very accurate.

Try Ameetec. If Warren still has them on sale, yoy can buy as a lower & as an upper & get it for less than $700.00  From what Iv'e seen about my Ameetec, looks better than most & runs fine, no problems.

Armalite make a fine M4 as well.

+1

I assembled this one using a complete STAG upper and a RRA lower (of which I built). I did make a few changes to the upper. Troy MFR-C FF, Phantom 52C FH, and a PRI "Big Latch" for the CH.

The Colt 6920 Law Enforcement Carbine is the closest thing available to a real M4A1. www.knesekguns.com has them for sale in the $1200 range. LMT comes close for a little less money. If the budget is a concern, Armalite, Bushmaster, RRA, DPMS and a host of smaller outfits turn out M4s of the same quality as eachother, only differentiated by their feature set. ArmaLite, BM, RRA, DPMS, etc. cut corners on manufacturing and assembly to save money; it all depends on your budget and how you're going to employ the weapon. For home defense, definitely go with Colt (or LMT). For a range/plinking gun, anything else will do nicely.

Yeah, except for the 16" barrel...

You need one of these....

OK!  To answer your question, you'll be happy with just about any off-the-shelf AR type rifle.  Most companies make a solid, competitive product.  They have to, or they'd go out of business rather quickly.  Of the 3 you listed, the differences aren't big enough to warrant major bias.  My personal favorite is Bushmaster but that doesn't mean I wouldn't be 100% satisfied with other rifles.

Pick any of the three you listed.  I promise you, you'll enjoy many years of solid performance.

Of the 3 you list I would go in the order you listed them.
Bushmaster, RRA, then DPMS.

One interesting option is the CMMG 14.7" with permanent A2.  Legal at 16", and looks very similar to a 14.5" obviously.

Agreed if you want the "Best" than it's the 6920 (with an extended permantent FS) or the 6921.  They have ALL the M4 features and are the closest to the TDP.

LMT is another excellent option.
