With H.R. 1022 in the wind, I need some help on deciding which assault weapons to start grabbing.
Due to the love of my Colt military issued M-4 (it saved my ass more than once) I would like to start the process with the Colt brand and then get as close to military specifications as possible. Whatever I decide I will be holding on to it for junior. What's my best bet.....Colt LE 6920, then down the road grabbing a Colt 14.5 upper then looking for a lower later on. I have an opportunity to grab an earlier model 6920 for $1250, not a great price, but not a bad one either. Also, what are your thoughts on the Smith & Wesson MP line of AR-15's. How does their tactical model rate against others? Help me out.

Prepare for the insult fest...

You will get called all sorts of dirty names if you say Colt makes a better rifle than brand X...

My view, get the Colt, I have 3 and love them.

You're not dumb for wanting a Colt, they make a great gun but so does a bunch of other companies.

First, unless you register a short barreled rifle, you can't have a 14.5" barrel unless you have a permanent flash hider making it 16".

The Smith & Wesson MPs are pretty respected between the members who own them here.

I'd recommend you get an LMT, you'd get superior quality just like Colt and save yourself a few dollars doing it.

Go with the 6920.

The S&W isn't a bad gun at all, but it's no Colt.

I started with a 6920 - sold the upper and I purchased a Colt 14.5HB upper with a phantom..

Good choice

Get the whole gun or at least the lower first.  Any ban coming will affect the lower as far as grandfather clauses.

If you want as close to the Colt M4 MIL go with the 6921.  Comes from Colt as a 14.5" SBR. (200.00 tax stamp)  Has M4LE roll mark as shown(6921SP 10").  You can go with the 6920, but you mentioned a 14.5" barrel.

Could also go with the 6933, same roll marks but comes with the 11.5" commando upper.  Buy a 14.5" upper later and have twice the fun.

Colt...by a long shot...& yes I do own RRA ar-15s & Armalite ar-10s...but from someone who shoots "issued" guns at work 20,000 some plus rounds a year, & must qual three times a year...Colt dose hold up the best. The 6920 is a great place to start.

I really like my Colt 6920. You can't go wrong with it. But LMT makes a great rifle also at a little cheaper price so don't rule them out before you take a look.

If you can swing it go with the COLT's, you'll have no regrets and resale value is always good

If you must get something a bit cheaper you'll still want the COLT.

I say GO COLT

There are a lot of good makers out there, but if you want a Colt $1250.00 is a pretty fair price for one right now and you won't go wrong.

Been very pleased with mine and it's run very well, I'm not complaining about the up front cost, I'll get the difference back if I ever sell one.

Unless you are buying a fully automatic rifle, then you are not buying an "assault rifle."  "Assault Rifle" is a blanket term made up by the liberal media to scare the population into believing any military-looking rifle is fully automatic; which is not true!  Stop using the gun-grabbers' terms.

Get the COLT, you won't be sorry. I have two of the 6920's and a bona-fide COLT M4. I have a few Rock River Arms, but the COLTS are my favorites. $1250 is a good price for a never fired 6920, I have seen them sell for much more.

ETA
A true M4 is a FA assault weapon, the 6921 is not an M4.

If you want something to invest in because of a ban, get a 6921.

If you want something for serious use, get a 6921.
