Hello all. I was recently bitten by the AR bug after shooting a buddy's Colt and am now looking at purchasing one of my own. I've done the online research. I've sorted through stacks of literature. And now I'm ready to buy. I think. hmaster.
Thanks!

If you can, build the gun yourself.  You get to handpick exactly what you want for every part of the rifle, and can usually do it for less or the same as a factory built rile with fewer features.

My (newbie!) advice would be to go visit the dealers first.

Browse around, talk to the staff, and get a feel for the store. Then buy one at a store you like, that's helpful and friendly. If you find a good dealer, that's worth paying extra. You can also check the prices and compare.

If you're anywhere near central IN, I'd highly recommend Bradis, 5 mi. SW of 465 on SR 67. I just bought my first AR from them Saturday, and they were nothing but helpful and pleasant. It's a real 'mom & pop' kind of place, a converted house just off the SR. I saw some similar to what you are looking for (but not exact), and I seem to remember that they ran around $800-$900. But...grain of salt with my estimate here, I was entranced by the Bushmaster carbine that became mine. hey
Ask around the Indiana board in the Hometown section, too. There are more knowledgeable folk than I, there.

Do you get to the Wilbur Wright range at all? I've never been there, and am going to take the First AR out there this week and put some rounds through it - finally!

Terre Haute, IN here. But I'm willing to travel for a good dealer. Thanks for the recommendation!

As far as the build comment: that's not exactly what I want to get into at this time. This will be my first AR so I'm a little confused as far as fit and function. I'd rather buy a quality shooter to play around with and save the building for my next AR. That's how I got into 1911's, and I currently have 4 (3 of which I built). Besides, I won't know exactly what I will want in a custom rifle until I play with one of my own to see what fits my personal tastes and needs.

So, anyone else with any ideas what kind of price I can expect? Also, any other recommendations of quality shops in the west-central Indiana area (I'll also post this in the Indiana section)?

Thanks guys!

Hey, I'm down in Sullivan Co. Been wanting to run over to Bloomfield to check out the new shop on the north side of the square. Can go this weekend. Care to ride along?

Wow, you couldn't have fared better if you posted in the Indiana hometown forum.

Kinda what I was thinking/hoping for. I actually had to run up to Indianapolis today (about 70 miles away) and stopped in a shop along the way that I've dealt with before. The owner said he could order me an A3 20" Bushmaster for $899. That is by far the best deal I've found with my usual dealers. So I'll more than likely give him a call in the next day or so and have him order me one. I could probably search around and save a couple more bucks, but it's worth the little extra money to deal with a guy that I know will take care of me.

Now, where can I buy LOTS of ammo!

Sorry Bob, I'll have to take a raincheck on that roadtrip. Prior plans with the family for this weekend. If you make the trip anyway, let me know about the place. I'm in Bloomington every so often and I haven't a clue where any gun shops are at. Thanks for the offer, I appreciate it!
