Came across a large pin Colt AR with a sear block.  What was the purpose of these?  What was the point of drilling the hole and then installing a block for the sear?  I realize it would be illegal, but are they removable?

I'm not a Colt collector but this was a really nice original Colt upper and lower.  Looked like a pencil barrel.  He said he would sell it for $1500.  I wasn't interested.

the purpose of the sear block was to prevent the installation of a drop in auto sear, or a lightning link

and removing them is not illegal

Wouldn't removing it make it ready for an auto sear?

The block that i've seen has a very large hole on the right,  way to big for a pin.  The removal method just cut the center block out (you could now use a FA carrier)& left the metal in the receiver to avoid having a hole.

The pin hole for the drop-in block is NOT the same for the sear. The block was simply added to "block" that portion of the receiver the DIA (drop in auto-sear) fitted into, and the hole for the pin is not related to the pin for a military M16 automatic sear (the DIA did not require a pin).
