How do you skirt a teardown? Yeah, I know it's the best way but most don't do it, so how do you?? All of the tricks here, along with all of the "secrect solvents". Tell us your methods. Air compressor and all.  Bill T.

the short cut that works for me is, add alittle oil befor each range session. and clean it every 3-4 thousand rounds.

I just keep it lubed and shoot brake cleaner through it after every range session.

Then after 2 or 3 thousand rounds I completely disassemle and clean thoroughly with Hoppes and CLP

Works for me, YMMV

No shortcuts here either! My son was a Drill Sergeant. He would have me doing push ups forever for having a dirty weapon.

Me too ... well ... sort of.   I have a Bushmaster that I just shoot and have fun with.  Unfortunately, I don't get to do that very often.  I don't care a whole lot about it as far as my usual anal-ness.  I spray some MP7 down the barrel and spray the front brush portion of a bore snake ... then I pull it through.  That's it.  I put a couple drops of oil on the BCG when I get to the range to shoot the next time.  After 1-2 thousand rounds, I clean the lugs and BCG.

On the other hand, my CMMG is my patrol and it gets cleaned completely every time it gets fired ... or at least before it gets put in my car next to me.  It's what I would expect a cop to deploy to save my behind if I was pinned down in front of a bank or something and I'm sure that's what the people in my city expect from my equipment.  Same goes for my Glock 31 and my Benelli.

I use CLP, a bore snake, and an air compressor. Clean rifle in under 5 mins.

For detailed cleaning, like cleaning the chamber etc I use a brass brush chucked in a drill and soaked in CLP. Makes quick work of the caked on carbon mess.

No Free Lunch
I strip the whole thing down, and blast it with brake or carb cleaner (there's my shortcut)- really gets into the small spots in the upper around the gas tube. Blast the tube itself out with it too, using the straw. Bore snake the barrel with some solvent, and every few hundred rounds I use bore foam. A quick spritz inside and outside the receivers with WD40 and a good wipe down to take off the excess. Blast the BCG with the brake cleaner after disassembly - blast out the gas key with the straw this time- and the bolt's firing pin hole too. Scrape the carbon off the back of the bolt. Put a drop of sewing machine oil (it stays where its put) on the ejector, and work it in with empty brass, hit the extractor channel with it too. Clean the carrier bore real good with a brush and put a thin coat of teflon oil in there, and a drop on the rings of the bolt. Put some teflon oil on the firing pin, and reassemble the BCG. Wipe the receivers down again with 'Gun Sheath' then a black cloth. Spray the bore with WD40 and pull the snake through again. Teflon grease the bolt lugs (lightly- on contact areas only) then the cam pin hole gets a good dose of grease at each end and worked in. clean out the lower parts with carb cleaner, and grease the sear contact surfaces only. A drop of oil on the end of each lower pin (from the inside) wipe off the excess on the out side.  Not to wet not too dry - won't attract too much dust or sand. Only takes about 15 minutes. Reassemble the rifle and wash up. Have a beer -

If I'm not sure when I'm going to go to the range again(like October-Janurary I spend my time bow hunting) I thoroughly clean it even if I only shoot 5 rounds through it.(Bore blast, Mobil 1 30w, with slightly more oil than usual.

This time of year when I shoot more I put about 1000 rounds through it before I ever touch it. It takes several range sessions for me to get to 1000 rounds so it may take a bit. It takes longer to clean it then but I enjoy torturing it a bit. Like someone else said, if it can't handle it, I don't want it. I already have a couple of primadonna firearms, my AR should be a workhorse. I just check the chamber and the bore carefully every day to make sure there aren't obstructions, maybe run a bore snake through it once after the session.
