Finally got around to compairing the accuracy of my DMPS 16" M4 before and after installing a MI 2PC FF handguard.

With Black Hills 77Gn Nosler Nato pressure ammo the average 100m group with standard handguards was 3.45"

After installing the MI 2Pc FF the 100M group average was 1.93"

It appears with this Carbine there was a noticable improvement in accuracy. Nothing else about the rifle has been changed. Just the MI FF handguards.

I am having a tough time with your conclusion.  Friend of mine has a Bushmaster with a 10.5 inch heavy barrel and a 5.5 inch flash suppressor. It has the standard short handguards. He reloads for it using 69 grain Sierra's and puts 10 shots into less than a half inch circle all day long. The only thing he as done to the gun is work the trigger over.

I'm having a rough time with yours  You only say he can put 10 shots in a half inch circle, at what distance?  In prone, with bipods or torquing with a sling?  On a machine rest?

I guess you're saying a free float handguard isn't necessary on your friend's rifle. In most cases, free floating a barrel will have positive impact on accuracy.

accuracy is affected by pressure applied by a sling, bipod, or rest.  a ff eliminates that.  handguard weight maybe a little, but thats more harmonics.

Nothing complicated about it. In this case this specific carbine shoots better after installing a FF handguard than before it had a freefloat handguard. In fact an improvement of over 1MOA by FF the brl.

Yes other rifles will shoot better than this one. The 77Gn NATO pressure load with the Nosler bullet is not known for accuracy. The nosler was chosen for superior terminal ballistics. Kowing that other 77Gn bullets shoot better groups and loading the bullit to near max 5.56mm presures is also detrimental to accuracy.

I have other rifles that will shoot .35" 100M groups with their preferred ammo.

This is simply an example of what free floating a brl can do.

Your first post and it is pretty much full of meaningless info.

thanks for posting your test results, some MI FF handguards may be in my future on my next rifle.

a ff handguard really only has an effect on accuracy if you are heavily using the sling, or shooting past 300

this is what I have been told by camp perry shooters.....

how about barrel harmonics?

FF handguards helped me alot to,  I had a Cmmg knocked from a 20" down to a 14.5 with mid gas and ff rail installed and went from 2.00" groups to .83-1.10 at 100 yards using self loaded .75 bthp , .75 bthp Tap, and m193

I'm just using a from rest, no rear bag. "waiting on my bipod and QD bipod adapter to arrive in the ups"

Ar15fan,

Thanks for the report.

I have a non-FF 5.56 upper and I'd really like to take some time and shoot it with varying tension on the forend and see how badly POI was affected.

LOL!

Great avatar by the way. One of my all-time favorite movies. "I'll make ya famous!"

ETA: FF is the way to go. Though some barrels will actually shoot better with tension/preasure points. For example, the Remington 700 LVSF has pressure points in the stock - some shoot great with em, some without (some guys file them down to float the barrel for greater accuracy - some got better and some worse). There are many variables to consider.

Had a 14.5" Bushy with stock handgaurds that shot almost as well as my 16" V-Match (FF) with factory ammo. (Almost).

+1- I have always wanted to try this.

Let us know the results if you ever do it.

Thats at 100 yards off a bench rest and he holds the gun and trips the trigger all by himself!

Talk about rock steady.

I have see him shoot his Remington 700 VS in 308 with Sierra 165 gr jhp's. Would you believe total hole size of .400 of an inch for a five shot group? Take off the bullet size and he is under 1/10 of an inch spread for a five shot group. Not too bad for a off the shelf rifle.
