I have been trying to get a buddy to buy an AR and I think he is about to.  He is a big .22lr shooter and wants to know who makes a good .22lr upper for his "soon to buy" AR-15.

Why not buy/build a regular 5.56 AR and get a 22LR bolt and mag for it? Then you have one gun and can shoot both types of ammo out of it. Plus, the bolt/mag is way cheaper than an upper. I got one from Brownells. $139, way cheaper if you have a C&R on file with them.

Heres my 22 upper on my RR M16.  Tons of fun although its taken some tweaking to get it to run right.

If he wants a truly accurate .22LR upper he should consider Compass Lake Engineering.

Great reputation for accuracy, but not cheap by any means.

If he decides to get one of these, or any other conversion based on the M261 system, the cheapest source for magazine inserts is Gun Parts Corp.

There is a separate forum here for rimfire/pistol caliber ARs.
