I've already posted this in the the Maitenance section but I've gotten no replies yet.

My AR is failing to feed a round after each shot.  I thought it was because it was dirty and it was so i cleaned the heck out of it but after todays day at the range that wasn't the problem.

The only way I can describe it is, that it's short-stroking and failing to grab a new round from the magazine.  I think the main cause is perhaps a dirty gas tube.  I have no idea how to clean that.

Anyone else know of what else it could be?

I know its not the magazine cause i have used them before and they functioned flawlessly.

Sorry I haven’t checked the Maintenance forum yet, I would have seen your post eventually. Have some patience!!!

First off, have you done any modifications lately to your weapon? Any gas block mods or work on the gas system?  Can you give a description of your rifle?

What ammo are you using?  Don't mess with your gas tube, it cleans itself each time you shoot it.

My rifle is a Bushmaster with a 16" barrel.  I havent made any modifications to my upper at all.

It has an HBAR barrel with standard handguards with A1 style sights.  I havent touched anything as far as the gas block.

The only thing i can think of is that its possibly all the dirty ammo that has been run through it that eventually clogged it or something.

some underpowered ammo had done that.  check and make sure gas block is tight if its not pinned, as well as everything else on the rifle.  inspect the mag and bolt catch.  try shooting a round with no mag, see if it locks back.  what lube are you using in the cold.

check your bolt carrier, make sure the key is screwed on tight and properly staked.

If you think your gas tube is blocked, try shooting some brake cleaner down the tube followed by compressed air.

As far as I can tell the bolt is tip top.   I cant find a single problem, everything is solid.

The lube ive been using is hoppe's but it wasnt cold today, it actually got up into the upper 60's so that shouldnt have had any any effect.

Gimme a minute and I'll get the handguards off, these things are a bitch somtimes.

Identify your problem first.

Single load 1 rd in a magazine and fire it to see if the bolt locks back on a empty mag. Do this about a dozen times. This will tell you if your getting enough gas. If it does not lock back consistently, you have a gas problem which may be ammo related (low power ammo)

What brand Ammo are you using??

Also get some good factory ammo and do the same thing.

Also

Is this a factory rifle or did you build it??
Is it new or used?
Most guys don't shoot enough even with dirty ammo to clog a gas tube.
Do the single shot in a mag test on several brands of ammo to identify your problem.

Thanks for the help guys, i gave it a shot of break cleaner and blew it out.  I hope that fixed it.
I can't get the handguards off cause I never bought a wrench to help me so thats out for now.
I will check it though when I go over to my friend's house.  He's a full time machinist and avid shooter so maybe he has encountered this before.

Yeah it never caught the magazine.  I was shooting it at the range and evertyime I fired the last round the mag catch never kicked in.

I was shooting some of my reloads which are somewhat hot, and I shot some Winchester white box and Sellier & Bellot.

I'll pick up some good shells from somewhere before I go to the range again.

It's a factory rifle that I bought used from a gun collector but he said he never fired more than 200 rounds through it.  He had to sell some of his collection to pay for lawyer fees because he was in the middle of a divorce.  God I would hate to have to do that.

I'll definately try that when I'm at the range again, hopefully on friday.  I just hope this brake cleaner did the trick.

check the bolt catch and make sure it moves freely, does it catch when you manualy lock it back with an empty mag locked in place?some times the gas tube..the part that contacts the key can sometimes become worn and wear unevenly causing gas loss, change out the tube.Try good full powered ammo and see how it does with that.

make sure its a carbine recoil spring and stock buffer, sounds like your short stroking.  i havent heard win or s&b to be underpowered.

you dont need a wrench to take your handguards off, theyre just a pia sometimes.  you can always move the circlip back to release the tension on the spring.

Watch out for an A2 stock screw installed in an A2 stock.
Do the short stroke test above.
