I'm looking for a varmint upper that will do the job out to about 300 yards.. I am looking at a couple uppers:

Hi-rise upper

Flattop upper

Which upper style would you use, and why??

Do you think the 16" barrel will work, or should I go with the 20"??

Anyone have specific experience with either upper, and difference in accuracy 16" vs. 20"??

I've also looked at Fulton Armory uppers, they are considerably higher, but say " expect 1/2 MOA or better".... Has anybody been able to verify, or can DPMS match that??

Thanks in advance

Id go with the standard flat top upper, then purchase a GG&G 1/2" riser picatinny mount that extends over the free float tube a couple inches.  Use what ever rings and scope you want after that.  The base will give you some flexibility on how you want the glass mounted.  I am a taller person w/ a longer neck so it helps me to have the scope a little further forward.

The 16" will do fine out to 300yards, I recommend the 20" though for better terminal performance on kritters if you plan on varmint hunting with it.

Personally mine is a 24" DPMS bull barrel upper, its long and its heavy, but shooting prone on a dog town, its nice to have that extra mass past the pivot point (bipod).

I have the 20" flattop upper with SS BB and love it.  It shots great, but I have a friend with the 16" and we really can't tell the difference as far as accuracy at 200 yards.  I shoot less then 2" groups at 200 yards with hand loads with mine, and he does the same.  Weight is the only thing that we can see that is noticable.  If I bought another it would be the 16" upper.  For the hunting that I do with it, I really don't have a chance to shoot over 3 or 4 hundred hards so I wouldn't spend the extra money, but others would disagree.  I do give DPMS the thumbs up on my upper.  I hope this helps.

Edit:  I love the flat top receiver and would shy away from the high rise.  If you want your scope mounted higher I would just get a riser or high scope mounts.
