Greetings,

I bought a post ban 20" Colt Match Target Comp back in '04. I am confused by the markings found on the receiver versus those on the barrel - the receiver is marked .223 yet the barrel is marked C MP 5.56 NATO 1/9 HBAR. I've only recently learned there is a difference betweeen .223 and 5.56 though I've only ever run .223 through it. Will it safely fire 5.56?

Secondly, since it is a post ban and does not have the evil flash suppressor, is retrofitting just a matter of threading the end of the barrel and selecting the appropriate suppressor to fit?

Thanks - I enjoy your forum though it seems to encourage me to spend too much $ - I've got a Super Sniper and LaRue SPR mount on the way

don't look at the lower markings...only the barrel' markings will tell you what it can fire. You are good to go with 5.56

as for the flash suppressor...just send the barrel to ar15barrels.com or adcofirearms.com and have it threaded

+1 The 5.56 NATO barrel markings tells you what it's chambered and type of ammo it could use.

Don't pay attention to the lower receiver markings because they never changed some of the models, both my AR6721 AR-15A3 Tactical Carbine and Match Target HBAR lowers are marked also with .223 cal.

You could now have any flash suppressor you like A2, Phantom, Vortex, etc, just have the end of your barrel threaded.

Add your flash suppressor as soon as you can before another possible future AWB.
