I am new to this site but my son is not. He suggested I ask my question here. About 1986 I bought a used AR-15 from a fellow at my Navy Reserve Center. As best as I can tell, it has a Colt A1 upper, Colt barrel and a SENDRA lower. Anyone care to comment on the quality of SENDRA Lowers. The lower is marked: Cal. 5.56mm, XM15E2, serial # is between 02800 and 02900. It is also stamped SENDRA Corp. Barrington, Il. Safe / Semi.

I'm not familiar with the SENDRA lowers.

What is your son's Username here?

Sendra only made lowers. Go to the retro forum for info. It's an A1 style lower. Not many left in semi, most went FA in the old days. The lower is cast and well made. Mine has over 50,000 rounds on the lower.
The ban states love them. The lower can bring over $400.

I do live in a Ban state.  Does anyone know the particular reason that someone wrote that those in Ban states love these?  Did they probably mean all semis in general or is there somthing particular about this particular model/manufacturer?  I fell into this a couple of  days ago.  I have only a basic knowledge of the AR15/M16 from my military time.  I'm into sport shooting and wanted something to commemorate my time in service.  I really don't know what I have here, but thanks to this site I am learning.  I've been searching the net, but as most of you already know, info is limited.

People in ban states like Sendra lowers because they're all pre-ban.

(Someoen will come along and correct me if I'm wrong....it seems like there may have been a handful of post-ban sendra recievers, but my memory is fuzzy)

Anyway, it *probably* is a pre-ban, so it's worth more to someone in a ban state.

I am told it is a preban but I'm still a little confused as to why that is a plus.  I could buy a new Bushmaster today with an A2 upper and they'd be vitually the same right?   The appealing factor to me is the "mystery" tied to it all.  Maybe that's it with others as well?

Sendra lowers are forged, not cast.  I bought the same rifle you did, GIHardBaller.  Mine came with all M16 parts in it minus the auto sear.  You might want to check to see if your rifle is legal or not.

I stand corrected I do not live in a banned state (DE), but I work in one (MD).  Living in AZ a non ban state, why may GIHARDBALLER's rifle be illegal?

I am the son mentioned in Post #1.

We have gone through the gun already several years ago, with the help of a guy in my reserve unit who owned a shop and did some custom 'smithing.   He did find one M-16 part, which was replaced on the spot.

The Upper appears (markings on the barrel "C MP C") to be an original Colt A1 Upper.

Pops wants an SBR, but I believe that he can better spend the $200 elsewhere.  (The usual......Mags 'n Ammo).   We have tossed around the idea of him selling the Sendra lower and picking up two new lowers and building two brand new guns.  This is not an issue, as we live in AZ.

My idea:
1) Sell off the Sendra to a ban state and buy two lowers.
2) Keep the Colt A1 upper intact for a possible later retro build, or just an upper swap as the mood strikes.
3) Build an A2, as he already has an A2 upper.  He has a "service rifle" theme going with the rest of the collection, and this will fit in nicely.
4) Build a shorty with a carry handle upper as Pops does not seem too keen on a flattop.
5) Will the entire collection to me, as my brothers are piss poor at weapons maintenance!

Really, he'd be saving their lives, cause the first time one of them brings me a gummed up, rusted hunk of steel saying "I cant get dads gun to work", I'd shoot 'em right in their big fat melon.  Ok, maybe a foot on the first offense, but they'd damn sure get hurt for it!

Your's is a Sendra alright, can't miss that damn Grape Juice color. Our lowers are about 4700 numbers apart, mine being older. I noticed a difference in that I have a third ridge that stops my selector when pointing straight up to semi. Yes my son is correct, several years ago his friend did find an M16 part in it but it was replaced about 30 seconds later. That's what happens when you buy from a private party and don't have full blown BRD. Once you have it you know to look.
