Been reading/lurking the AR forum for a while. Wanted to get some tips on what a good first AR would be. Seems like people hold the Colts in high esteem, but they seem to be quite expensive. I do not want to build my own AR, but want to buy a complete gun at a good price. Can someone give me some tips on what models/manufacturers are well regarded? I am most interested in models as close to milspec as possible... Thanks in advance! |
You can find a "close-as-legal" AR made by DPMS in any Mil.-style config,. for well under a grand. |

DPMS-Bushy-Rock River All those companys make a nice intro AR and and can be had at a pretty good price if you look around. You need to add more info about the type of gun you want. Barrel length stuff like that. A nice rifle to look into would be a M4 A3 each of those listed companys makes a model of it. The A3 will give the flat top so you can add optics and sights simply. Its a 16in barrel so you can swap out hiders and the barrel is not to long for diffrent aplications. If at some point you want a rail that can be had and added with no problem also. |

Thanks! I probably am most interested in m4 style rifles with 16" barrels... I have AKs, and was considering buying from Atlantic, is that also a good place to buy ARs? I am also interested in getting on marked federal gov't property, for law enforcement's only or whatever... Any ideas on what the cost should be for something like that (m4 style, top rail, 16" barrel, close as possible to milspec, with gov't markings)? Thanks! |

I'm in the same place as you. Want to purchase my first AR, already assembled. I've looked at a couple of options, including pre-owned. I leaning toward one of two choices. 1. The RRA Entry Tactical - lists for $1000, can be had for $850-$900. - Does anyone know for sure how their detachable tactical carry handle works? - When attached does the handle basically look like other handles or is it something different completely? 2. Bushmaster M4 A3 with either a birdcage or izzy flash suppressor - lists for 1230.00, but can be had for $900. - I thought RRA considered more expensive, but it seems their prices are about the same as Bushmasters. Comments? Is it a big deal to get a barrel that has a removable flash suppressor? I figure unless I'm going to put a silencer on it, it doesn't matter. Going along with the previous question, I'm still trying to get a grip on the difference between the A2, Izzy, and Birdcage flash suppressor. Anyone??? |
