You have to be LE or involved with LE training and have gone to the Sims school to purchase. I believe they will only sell to LE agencies.

Why dont you ask them: http://www.simunition.com/index_en.php  , they have contact information on their site along with conversion kit information.   They may have hoops you need to jump through as a civilian to purchase their stuff but I bet there is a way to accomplish your goal.

Pretty much the most realistic training avaliable.  A lot of people will say go with tactical paintball, but its really not the same.   A tippman a5 decked out to look like but not feel like  your favorite service weapon, along with its 200 round hopper, just doesnt scream realism.  but a glock 17 modified to fire sim rounds is another story.   Dont let the blue frame fool you it can get intense, the guns work EXCACTLY like real guns, no co2 no slapping your hopper. Just ram the magazine home and rack the silde(or charging mechanism, they make kits for many different types of weapons, but I have only been exposed to the glock).

Simunition uses actuall cased ammo, that fires "paint bullets"  So when you run out of ammo you have to insert a fresh magazine.  I have only done simunition at dusk, but I have got to say your heartrate really jumps when you see actual muzzle flash.

Simunitions  will make you jump threw hoops by making you go to their  training classes every two years and spend thousands of dollars each year to be able to buy their stuff as a civilian .

One of the guys I work part time for now was a instructor for a SWAT team and team leader of that SWAT for around 20 years. He attended the simunitions tactical classes and was teaching their instructors things that they now use in their course. Now he is retired and has started a training school for civilian and law enforcement. He tried to get simunitions for the law Enforcement classes. According to Simunitions  he is no longer qualified to buy simunitions with out doing what I stated in  above.

Look into UTM. It requires only a replacement bolt, is about the same for ammunition costs, and is more accurate.  Additionally, there is no requirement for training.

The only thing you need to make sure of is that you don't have a brand new barrel. If you do that, the projectiles tend to stick in the bore.

These don't leave as big a mark on gear, but they will hurt you if you're really close or not wearing the recommended protective gear. I've bled under them many times as OPFOR.

Oly Arms invented the Simunitions system, according to them. I have gotten replacement mags from Oly so you might check with them.

Just remember guys, NEVER EVER shoot the OPFOR guys in the head, unless you wanna be held by your arms and shot in the balls.

Get the POINT?

I was a Simunitions instructor back in the day with 20" M16's (simunitions suck on burst). I also have experience with their Glock system.

They are what they are. They are much better than blank training because no one wants to get hit with them. I have been cut EVERY time I have had to take a close range hit. I have a "sim shirt" because it usually ends up with a new hole in it.

However for the money, private individuals really cannot justify Simunitions. I have been looking into Airsoft replicas for training. They hurt like hell, and there is no gear cleaning and no squib rounds. You can get a WIDE variety of weapon systems and some are fairly high quality for toys. Plus NO CLEANING. Cleaning Simunitions suck.

Sims are nice, and there are a bunch of us on the board who are Simmunition Supervisor/ Instructors.  They are available outside of LE & MIL, but there is certainly more work involved.   There are other force on force marking systems available, with UTM being one.  There are also new companies getting ready to release marking cartridges similar to Simmuniion, which should help to drive the cost down.

OA makes Sim parts and uppers, which I think are available to anyone.

I've used SIMUNITIONS with Glock 19's, SW 5946's, and HK MP5's... I think the idea is great, cept more often than not the weapon failed in some way. Magazine floorplates ripped off, FTF, ect.

I have a permanent scare on my left hand from getting into a 5 foot fire fight on a stairway. Yeah, I know we violated the safety rules on distance but the training was very realistic and I did not want to loose the fight. I took a shot to the hand but I shot the other guy in the face (goggles). The round ripped right through my nomex glove.

I love simmunition training... I spent two weeks last summer teaching rookies (well, newer rookies than myself lol) how to do traffic stops with simmunitions, as well as lots of training in the shoothouse from the academy and inservices since I've been out.

Nothing teaches you what not to do better than a little "ballistic counseling"

Try the RAP4. They have an M4, AK47, Glock, MP5, and now a shotgun. The M4 weighs the exact weight as a real one so it'd be good. You can even buy metal "casings" so that it even sounds "real" when hitting concrete or something. I was thinking of getting one but I'm spending too much money on real guns lately

I heard a story about the 5.56 rounds. During testing, an Army commander kept wanting the charge increased so the pain would be greater and the learning curve bolstered somehow. They stopped and backed off on the load after a few rounds penetrated skin through a set of BDUs. I bet that test subject wasn't too happy.

The great thing about the UTM is that they use the 5.56 bore and regular magazine. No change in gear or weapon essentials, such as optics.

I wish someone would make something that worked as a sniper sim (good for 100 meters or beter) without actually being possibly lethal.

I remember two NCO's in Doughboy City who thought the SRTA rounds wouldn't penetrate a flak vest at point blank (as in contact) range. Gosh, those were the good times.

Our Sims rep, Shane Ludwig, was a SEAL with some of my coworkers. Simmunition has a lot of new stuff coming out, but I still like the UTM for plain old ease of use. This stuff adds a lot of realism to training (sims in general, that is) and if you get the chance, use it.

We use "sim rounds" here at Ft. Irwin sometimes, and one soldier did not clean his m4 barrel after firing a few 30rd mags through it. (we use the kits where you replace the BCG with the synthetic non rotating bolt BCG, all you do is swith out BCG's). We went to the live fire range, and when he shot a live round out of a very dirty barrel, he had a KA-BOOM.... It blew up the upper, handguards, barrel, gas tube, dust cover, and the bolt. It also distorted the lower very badly...... Kind of off the subject, but an interesting story no?

I wasn't aware that they had a conversion that actually used the 5.56mm barrel.

The only stuff I ever used in the Corps used a 8mm conversion so that no live rounds could be fired.

All of our Glock Sims here use the 8mm round.
