I just purchased a used Colt CAR-A3 HBAR ELITE and would like any information about it.

It has a 20" heavy/bull SS barrel and a Colt scope rail.

This is my first AR and I can't find any info on it anywhere.

What's the difference between the A1's, the A'2, and the A3's?

Thanks    John

welcome aboard sparky and congratulations on your new Colt

The A1, A2, A4, A4 designation is more often used to describe the upper receiver configuration, although barrels and lowers are also classified as A1 and A2

short version:

A1 - fixed carry handle with the rear sight lacking elevation. Standard until early mid 80's

A2 - fixed carry handle, rear sight has both windage and elevation

A3 - flat top upper often with removeable carry handle. Best option for those using optics and other accessories.

The Elite is a good rifle, but would be best used for bench shooting (it is heavy). Most enthusiasts will have an alternative upper reveiver (carbine, or rifle) to expand their possibilities
