Why is the Delta ring called the Delta ring?

12/21/2006 1:22:48 PM EDT
[#1]
because originally it was in the shape of a triangle?

Side profile looks like a D?

I don't know.

Originally they were not tapered, so it can't be the shape.

Delta is Army phonetic for D, so it may be something that starts with D.

When they aren't  tapered, they were/are called slip rings, correct?

Because calling it a…….

Alpha ring

Bravo ring

Charlie ring, all sounded stupid.

Delta ring sounds more tacticool!

How many rings from either end are there in an AR

From the stock

Gas rings x3-A,B & C?

then the delta ring-Delta?

I have NO idea either but thats the best I can think of, though I have no Idea why they would be called anything else besides their technical name

My guess is because the delta ring is tapered into a somewhat triangular shape like a delta as opposed to the original "slip ring".

Plus "delta" sounds hella more cool and "operator"-like than "tapered".

Delta-ring
In mathematics, a nonempty collection of sets  is called a δ-ring (pronounced delta-ring) if it is closed under union, relative complementation, and countable intersection:

Relative to the math term possibly?

Some of you crack me up.  The AR was designed long before anyone knew what "tacticool" or "hella cool" meant.  Or "hella" anything for that matter.
