Can someone edumacate me on the differences in the blue versus black extractor spring and inserts?

It's my understanding that 20" barrel rifles get the blue insert and the shorter 14.5 M4s get the black insert/spring.  Where do 16" barrel rifles fit into the equation?  Does it matter that much if the spring and insert are or are not "correct"?

No, it doesnt matter.

Ths black ones are firmer than the blue ones, and they help the
shorter barrel guns extract better. The buffer reduces the "bounce"
of the extractor.  I wouldnt worry about it.
If your gun functions properly with the one that is in it,
leave it alone, it will be fine.
If it ain't broke, dont fix it...

I'm going to disagree a bit.  If your 16" is running a carbine length gas system, you ought to get the  black insert/HD spring combo.  The carbine length gas system is hard on extractors and they could use the help.

Stiffer spring? Absolutely.

Black insert? If you're an obsessive personality and just have to have "what the Army uses" OK.  But the blue ones work equally well, and my own pressure testing of blue vs. black indicates there isn't a nickels worth of difference between the two in stiffness.
