| Can someone please define these? I would Like to know what each of them are. I often see things named recce or recon and appear to be the same. who knows the actual differences? |

Obviously there are several variations, but here is a quick overview: Recce/Recon: there is no official one definition, but generally: a carbine with a 16" barrel, medium profile, free-floating rail (often of an extended length), with a low-power (fixed 4x, 1-4x, etc) optic. The "Recce Rifle" is a concept used by the SEALs. The idea is to have a carbine that is useful for CQB ranges but that also is very accurate to "Reach out and touch" people quickly at 500+ meters. ACOGs or reflex sights with accompanying magnifiers are popular choices. SPR ('Special Purpose Rifle'): Two official models exist, the Mk12 Mod0 and Mk12 Mod1. These are designed for target engagement out to about 800m. These are distance rigs, not designed for CQB, but usable for such in a pinch. 18" "SPR"-profile barrel, mid-power optic (the official one is the Leupold 3-9x MR/T), free-floated handguard (PRI on Mod0, KAC on Mod1), Harris bipod, etc. SDM-R/SAM-R: designated marksman rifles. I can only speak with authority on the SDM-R, having carried one. The designated marksman is a regular part of an infantry squad, and normally his responsibilities mirror those of a standard rifleman. However, he carries a rifle designed to provide a little help for distance work as well. He is trained to a higher level in distance marksmanship than the typical infantryman. The Army Squad Designated Marksman - Rifle consists of a 20" 1/8 Douglass stainless steel barrel with 12 longitudinal flutes, Colt upper/lower, Daniel Defense 12.0 freefloat rail w/ steel barrel nut, Harris bipod on ARMS mount. Issue optic is typically an ACOG, either the TA01NSN or the TA31F. |
