.204 upper. Does anyone have one? I would like to hear your reviews about it.

Thanks

Would make a great varmit upper, but haven't heard of one in production.  The good thing about the AR platfrom is all you should need is a custom barrel, and maybe a bolt depending on the base size.

Got one, haven't shot it yet. he
Shilen is making a 24" 1/9 match grade bull barrel with matched bolt. They're $400 at Midway. I'm very tempted to pick one up.

I have seen a white oak armament .204 upper advertised in several of the predator hunting magazines I read. Looks real sharp, I think they were around $500 or more.

oh ya, white oak, I forgot about them. I will look em up now!

Thanks!

I have been talkin to a guy about buildin me one for around $600. The problem is that I already have a bolt gun in .204 and can't justify having 2 rifles in the same caliber.

Other than the obvious, do you guys see any advantages of AR upper in .204 over a bolt gun??

I do a good bit of predator hunting myself, and the number one advantage to the AR over bolt gun is that quick follow up shot.  I don't own a .204 and probably never will, but I have read that there is hardly any recoil at all in the AR platform which would be great for a 2nd, 3rd shot.  That's just my opinion.  I assume that you will be hunting with this rifle.  I also have noticed that over the years, shooting an animal with a bolt action if there are multiple animals around you at once, the others very seldom run right away from the sound of the gunshot, but as soon as you work the bolt, they would take off.  Hunting with a semiauto has helped a lot with this.

My hunting buddy that likes to perform taxidermy on a lot of his critters prefers the Ruger 204.  He says he gets much less damage to repair than with my .223 or a 22-250.
I am going to put an upper together using the DPMS 204 barrel from Brownells, and hope that it has decent accuracy.  It should at least be a flat shooting little sob.

Good point on the fur damage...i am looking forward to Remington mainstreaming the 17 Mach IV (Rem 17 fireball)
Hornady loading commercial ammo for it... they say 20 gr VMAX /4000 fps

Looks like if I do get a new upper, it will be from D-tech. His seems to be well priced and I have read alot of good stuff about his uppers.

Got one, haven't shot it yet.  It's a 1/12, free floated 24" bull barrel upper made by Model 1 Sales. The 204 Ruger uses a standard size AR bolt.

Question about twist:
What is the best?
Shilen states 1/9 for VLD bullets....what is VLD?

VLD = Very Low Drag
Generally heavy for caliber, long sleek designs with long boattails.
Best for bucking the wind at long distance.

How is this any different that shooting .223 40gr bullets from your std. AR.  The prarie dog won't be able to tell the difference.

40gr 20 caliber bullets have a better BC than 40gr 224 caliber bullets.
Once the bullet hits the critter, it won't matter.

The 204 has slightly more powder volume due to it's longer case body.
You won't likely get the same velocity from a 40gr 223 as you will a 40gr 204.

If you get the "dealer" discount from Brownells, the barrel is only $170.00.  They are on back-order right now.  Waiting anxiously for mine.

Yeah I think about 1000fps faster.....that should really make PD PLOP!!!

223 can crank around 3800fps w/ a 40gr bullet, 204 gets around 4100fps....

Sorry I wasn't comparing apples to apples.
I usually shoot 50 and 55 grain BT out of my .223 because the group better for me.  I am looking to get a 204 so I can shoot a lighter bullet at a higer velocity to tear up PDs.

So you start our 300fps better and then have a better BC so your velocity gain on a 250yd target is more like 400 to 450fps better.
That's starting to get to be significant.
