I know the sight radius is the distance between the rear and front site.  Why am I told my sight radius on my sixteen inch rifle too short to be accurate?

Let me guess, you went to some range where everyone else had bolt action sporters, and the fudds told you this right.

It is true that a longer sight radius improves your ability to sight more accurately, but I seem to be able to shoot just as accurately with a 16" barrel as a 20".

A longer sight radius minimizes the decrease in accuracy for a given error in rear sight alignment.

But if the alignment is good with the front sight properly centered in the rear aperture, it does not make that much difference until the ranges start to get long.  For example a 1/2 MOA or even 1 MOA difference in accuracy due to sight alignment between a 16" and 20" rifle is going to be lost in the noise at a 100 yards unless you are doing precision shooting off the bench or from a supported prone position.  If you are shooting from offhand, sitting or kneeling positions, it is not going to make a significant difference for most shooters.
