Looking at getting an RRA mid-length rifle, probably the Elite CAR A4. I am not too savvy on the issues surrounding handguard selection. I do know one thing, I want a set of rails. I doubt I will be mounting optics anytime soon, but I will at least be adding a vertical foregrip and a light and want to maximize my flexibility.. for these reasons I would like a set of handguards with quad rails. From the factory there are a bunch of options, some of them being more than I want to spend. However, for $125.00 the "Quad Rail Aluminum Free Float" guards are available. 1. Are these a good set of handguards or would my $125 be better spent on different ones? (I don't want to spend more than $130 or so on handguards.) 2. Is there any disadvantage to free-float handguards vs. non-free-floated (if there is a name for them)? I place durability higher in priority than miniscule accuracy gains, so I wouldn't want something flimsy or which would cause problems mounting or using standard iron sights. 3. Is heat dissipation better with standard handguards or with free-float guards? Thanks. |

there is a lot of junk floating about. everything from china imports to airsoft. i would go with the free float quad rail from rock river set up just like you want in the first place. you will be able to mount optics, lights, lasers and your grip. all will stay zeroed and you won't be asking 6 months from now "WTF? why isn't my gun working?". good luck. again, buy it the way you want and add accessories to the rails. don't try to fix it later!. hk |
There's a lot of good info about all of the different railed forends available. Because you are going with a 16" barrel (rather than 14.5") I suggest you get your rifle with standard handguards now and then figure out what your needs ARE rather than what you THINK they might be. |
