I like large grips on my pistols so I decided that my AR had suffered long enough with a small grip.  The stock Hogue grip on my RRA allowed me to reach the trigger with the 2nd joint of my finger!  Besides my Hogue (comfortable) I tried an ERGO Overmould (I thought that the Beavertail would help. It did but only marginally), and even a Leapers (advertised with an 'adjustable' rest for the trigger finger).  No joy with any of them.  I looked at the Fobus/CAA G27 and MAID but they were no better. Finally, I got the idea to make my own.

The Fobus/CAA G27 is a hard plastic grip and I decided that I'd start with that and then stop by my local WallyWorld and got some plastic body filler and a can of flat black paint. I traded my ERGO and Leapers (got both on deals) straight up for the G27 at the funshow yesterday so all I have in the grip is the filler and the paint ($5). To compare, here is a picture of my AR with the ERGO Overmould. Comfortable grip but just too thin for my long fingers and the back-strap is sloped too far forward.

My custom grip. Note the thumb rest and the considerably thickened back-strap. That puts my hand in a comfortable and natural position with the pad of my trigger finger squarely on the trigger.

I also filled in the area that my trigger finger will rest on for comfort (got the idea from the Leapers grip [only thing I liked about it]).

It feels really comfortable and solid. All in all, I'm very happy with it.
