I got a good deal on a Bushmaster M4 upper at a gun show. $300 with the complete bolt carrier and charging handle. In the state I live in I must have a post ban set-up,wich means no bayo-lug no flash hider. A few questions. This mini-Y is not a "flash hider" correct? It is permanantly attached? (I saw another thread about removing it, it's not too easy) Making my barrel more than 16"? I don't like it, but don't want to deal with removing it, has any body modified it? I want to eliminate some of the rearward muzzle blast, I really don't need any of the "comp" effect. Is there a way to plug the holes? Put a sleave inside or outside? Or am I going to have to wrap it with duct tape??

THANKS!!

measure your barrels overall length. It may be 16" overall making it a 14.5" barrel with the mini-Y being perm attached.

I dont know if the BM Izzy brake is Ban state legal but it looks better than the mini-Y. Thats what BM is using now to make their 14.5" barrels a legal 16".

Correct

It is permanantly attached?

Yes

I don't like it,

Not many do (especially if they are shooting next to a guy who has one)

Is there a way to plug the holes?

No.  You could send the Upper to Randall and he could remove the brake and replace it with a faux flash hider (which does nothing but look 'kewl').

Put a sleave inside or outside?

You used to be be able to get an external sleeve for the AK brake (Tapco sold it), but I've never seen one for the Mini-Y.

Or am I going to have to wrap it with duct tape??

If you do, please post video.  That should be fun to watch as the pressure hits it.  Instant Confetti!

The Y comp sucks.During the ban,I was jacked up about buying an Mforgery, bought one of the bushy's right after they came out.My usual range at the time was an indoor, underground range.I fired off 10 rounds and couldnt take it anymore. You stood in a 6X6 foot concrete room, and shot down a tunnel. It sucks, even outside.Shooting from prone,it will push your ear protection off your ears

Had one on my first AR.  They shoot nice, and you won't notice the noise or the blast.  Does suck to be the guy standing behind and slightly to the side of you, though.

Box it up and send it to Steve at ADCO. He will remove it and attach a Phantom FH and you will not regret it. He did mine. The most EXCELENT workmanship and the quickest turnaround time you will find. Check their web site for details. NO REGRETS. cut it off before it gets infected....

You don't think he will regret it as he sits in a NJ prison for having a banned weapon?

Did ya miss he part in blue?

If you don't want to deal with removing it, I would just run it unless you plan on shooting next to someone. I had to deal with a lefty that had one right next to me in a tactical carbine class.  Everytime he shot my vision would shake.

Mini-Y-Comp = Satin!

First time I shot a Bushy I bought with a Mini-Y-Comp on it, I thought I'd forgotten my ear protection. I hadn't. It was just fracking loud. Replaced it with a Phantom. Ahhhhhh.

The only thing rivaling the mini-comp in decibels is - maybe - the AK brake Bushmaster offers

Seriously loud - in fact, disturbingly so.

Change that thing out!

edit to add:

Welcome aboard, Eljay!!

Thanks to all that replied. The Bushmaster "Izzy" is that a nickname or what it's really called? Sold through BM or who? My barrel is "just" 16 inches with the comp so anything else would have to be longish. I though about attacking it with a drill to open up the "Y" holes and to increase the ID. Thanks for the welcome.
In NJ jail time is allways in the back of your mind, if the Gestapo saw the Mini Y I'm sure they wouldn't know what to make of it. 7 years for possession of more than 15 round mag and you don't have to own the gun it fits. I'm glad I don't have any of them!!

NJ gun laws....If they aren't reason enough to leave the state, what is?
Don't screw up your rifle.  Let ADCO fix you up with a better brake. Mini Y =bad ju-ju.

Yes it's sold through Bushmaster, it's called the IZZY.  Make sure you get the BRAKE version (small front hole) and not the Flash Supressor version (large hole on the end).

They are long enough to get your barrel to the legal 16" limit (and they look better than the Mini-Y too).

Don't do that!  Opening up the front hole will enhace it's flash supression abilities - making it a de-facto flash supressor (though a poor one).   Just replace the unit with an Izzy or the long faux flash supressor.

Get that vicious little bastard cut off!!  Bushmaster BTW, did NOT make the Mini-Y Comp.  It was made by.......

THE DEVILLLLL!!

Mine would blow stuff backwards off of the shooting bench.  It is the most evil yet very effective compensator ever made.

I got mine cut off by Kurt's Kustom Firearms several years ago.  He replaced it with one of his "A2" style comps.  They look great, are not vented on the bottom and are not legally classified as a "flash suppressor".  I do not know if Kurt is still in business (a search on AR15.com was fruitless), but if he is still in business he does very good work at a reasonable price.

Very profound statement and very true.  It's like Bushmaster could give a damn about noise for the shooter and designed the most effective compensator they could. It is the best I have ever used.

BTW, its hell to bump fire too.  Put that thing on your hip and it feels like a cannon.  Kind of cool in a maschoistic kind of way.

Still, I for one am a large bore rilfe and handgun shooter.  I'm pretty use to a loud bang.  I've kept mine for it does work and quite frankly I kind of get a sick enjoyment out of the deerhunters at the range wtih their 7mm mags going "Holy shit!".

On a personal note, I have absolutely no respect at all for New Jersey gun laws nor trust the adherence to them one iota.  I wouldn't change a thing that even came remotely close to a violation or would draw unwanted attention to a weapon in that state.  If you so chose, I'd make sure you adhere to the law to the letter, no screw ons, permanently attached, length exact or longer, etc.

I had  the full size y-comp put on a dissy upper and loved it. My group sizes were smaller with it on.  But if you don't like it send it off to ADCO they will fix you up.
