Why is it that the 6 position collapsable stock tube has seemed to become "standard"?  I like the stock body itself commonly called the tactical stock, however fully extended to the 6th position just seems a bit too long for most people.  I am average size (6'00 tall) so it would seem to me that the 6th position is overly extended for most people (except you lurches out there ).  I use the tactical stock bodies but I have the CAR 4 position tubes, fully extending the stock (quickly) into a length that is not overly long seems better to me than trying to find the 4th position on a 6 position stock tube....  Make any sense?  The Colt carbines our dept. bought for road use only have 3 positions (and have the tactical stock bodies) fully extended they are no where near the length of a 6 position stock tube fully extended.....

i wasn't aware that the "open" lengths were any different. i just figured they drilled more blind holes, which made more "positions" that the stock can be set at...

anyhow, i never shoot with my stock(s) open more then half way. i'm 6'1", and with the stock all the way open, i feel like the gun is just too far out in front of me.

When Im useing IRON sight
I keep my NOSE SMASHED to the CH

My LMT DEFENDER has a SOPMOD with 6 positions

I use the 4th position mostly and Im 5.9

Im sure there are some BIG BOYS in the Military that use the 6th notch

I might use the 6th if I had a Rifle upper and a  Mil Dot Scope

Multi-position stocks are demanded these days due to the gear most people wear. In the day of plate carriers, and kevlar vests w/w-o plates that you need that adjustability to retain a normal shooting posture.

I have short arms, and use the 6th position.

Shoot your M4 at 400 yds, and then you'll see why.  That FSP is really big the closer you get to the RSA.

As a manufacturer of 6-pos stocks, I can answer some of that.
Often, a single rifle may/will have to be usable by multiple shooters, particularly in law enforcement agencies.  Invariably, some officers will be of smaller stature, with short arms etc...while there are also some very long-armed, large officers. The stock can be adjusted for each shooter to get a length of pull and sight picture appropriate for them. The more versatile the stock, the better suited it is for the end user.  The same will hold true in a family situation where one rifle might be used/enjoyed by shooters of different ages and sizes.
The RRA 6-position Tactical CAR stock is, as indicated, quite long in its fully extended position, which is 3/4" longer than an A2 stock.  The first position in (from fully extended)on our tube is the A2 stock length, the next position is A1 stock length, followed by two intermediate positions.  The final fully closed) position is the same length as our Tactical (short) butt stock.

From a manufacturer's view-point I can see the reason, one set up for all as the stock can be adjusted down for length.  I guess I was just doing some whiny bitching.....  Beware it's contageous.....

What I ended up doing was getting a 4-position RRA tube and mating it to the "tactical stock body".  Fully extended is just right in that config.  I just didn't like "looking" for the 4th position on the longer 6 position tubes......

Anyhow, why did RRA discontinue the 4 position stock assemblies (to include the older style stock body)?  I had trouble locating one right after I posted this.  I ended up finding one on auction as I didn't realize they were discontinued and everyone was sold out of them....

If you want to get rid of the positions past the fourth, all you have to do is remove the stock body, then get a wooden dowel the same size as the pin. Coat it lightly with grease (as a release agent) and then stick it in the hole you want the last position to be. Then fill in the part beyond that with JB weld (all the way to the top, not just the hole itself), making sure to get the area completely filled. Once it sets, trim off any high spots, and it's done. I did it to make my 4-pos a 3-pos, and it works great.

Ok, I took a picture of the buffer tube, so you'd get a better idea...

BTW, you can get the dowel in the crafts section at wally world.
