Need to know what to look for, where to start. Obviously I want the cheapest I can get that is quality. What kind of upper, what kind of lower to look for. I will probably by at a local shop, so I just need to know what to look for on the ones available, a local shop has about 50 different AR's, I don't know where to start.

I've decided to move up from the AK ( :) NOT trying to start a flame war :) )

Well first off, tell us what you want to do with the gun?

I shoot out in the country a lot, target shooting and I hunt a lot, so I would want it to be reasonabley accurate, but not competition. I also will have it in the home for SHTF scenario. So a medium barrel I suppose? I don't want super short tactical but also not a cane pole either. What is the best blend?

REM, this is my first. I want to be able to get familiar with it and then be able to start blowing vast sums of money up grading.

Welcome to the world of AR's, since you said you were a hunter I always tell the guys who may be walking to look for a 16 or 18" something that is light enough to carry. A 16" Rock River Arms is guaranteed to shoot 1" or better at 100 yards, most walking shots are in this range, the beauty of the ar is two pins and you can have the long range varminter.

My favorite is a carbine w/ 16" barrel. Go down to your local shop, (sounds like they have a good selection ) and look at, handle, drool over, every one of them.

A3/A4 all the way. You will use it a hell of a lot more in the open than you will in the house. I can still (and have) clear a house with a 20" with no problem, and many police departments still issue 20" M16's.

If I didn't have to worry about in/out of the car and mainly working indoors I would have a 20" for my patrol rifle.

.223/5.56mm is velocity dependant. Why not give it all the help you can?

RRA or CMT/Stag 16" Carbine looks like the way to go -- I'd go with the 6-Position style stock for the SHTF contingency, dunno what optics you'd be looking at for that kit, but some sort of reflex sight on the horizon makes sense too (hence why STAG made the list, Model#2)

Is it the A4 top that is flat with removable carry top? I want that because I have fired a friends with the scope attached to the top of the carry handle and it was awkward for me. So would that be an 'A4' top?

So 20" will give me better velocity and still not be too cumbersome, so prob either an 18 or 20".  Can I later install a match trigger or other trigger upgrade in just about any lower? And will most barrels later install in most uppers?

well do you plan on buying complete or slightly building?

RRA is the best, more available AR for the money complete, and thier uppers are great for the price

bushmaster would get my next vote b/c they are everywhere and thier CS is great

overall, i would opt for:
Chrome-lined bbl; 5.56/.223 wylde chambering, A3 (flatop) upper, 16-20in bbl, probably the 16in as its about the min needed for 5.56 effiency at some distance

lower: well, just about any quality forged AL, spec lower will work; there are some in the EE

check out the EE/industry forum for great dealers and competative prices

I was in the same position you were in last year.  I went with the RRA tactical entry 16" chrome lined barrel 1:9.  I have to say that its' extremely accurate with the basic iron sites.  Well past 100yds,
I'm very happy with my purchase and have fired the Colts, Bushmasters, and a few others and for the money IMO RRA is a good, quality AR.
As someone else posted earlier, if you wanted to a longer or shorter barrel, all you have to do is change out the upper.  Very versatile.
AR's are awesome.  They're like having a Mr. Potato Head that spits led!
Good Luck and let us know how it turns out.

Rock River or DPMS would be my vote, not in any particular order, and serve your purposes well. I also hunt a lot and use the A4 and I absolutely love it. Get the removable handle as it gives you more options to mount your optic on, if you are going to use one. Handle different brands and look over them, side by side, fit, finish etc. and then decide which one fits you best, not the one someone says is the best! You can get the same quality as a "High Priced" AR for way less as long as you shop around. Watch out for "Brand Bashers" because some people think if it is not a certain brand, then it's not any good, and they are all over this site for sure!!!!

I'm thinking of doing this.. >

Getting this kit from from RRA:
The complete CAR A4 kit: http://www.rockriverarms.com/item-detail.cfm?ID=AR4001&storeid=1&image=kcara4.gif&CFID=25401195&CFTOKEN=13986496

And then buying a stripped lower reciever like this one on gunsamerica:
DPMS Stripped Lower: http://www.gunsamerica.com/guns/976721698.htm

I would just need to bulid the lower receiver, which would be good for me to learn to do anyway to get familiar with the rifle. This would give me everything I need, right?

16" with midlength gas system; flat top receiver with removeable carry handle; fixed stock; lots of mags; lots of ammo.
