I have alwayys wondered just how the gas tube works. I'm some what new to the Ar-15 and I'm trying to get an understanding of the parts and mechanics. Can someone please advise?

It is simply the passage made to redirect chamber pressures once the bullet passes, to "throw" the bolt back, cycling the action automatically to chamber another round.
ETA: without getting technical, I hope that made sense.

It's just the way to get the gas from the barrel to the exansion chamber in the bolt carrier group.

Thanx for the explanation. It answered the exact question I had of how the gas gets back to the bolt carrier.
