Put both in the mag to double your reliability!

i have both and i'd definately say magpul gen II followers

w/ that said though either works fine but the part i love most about the magpuls is they're so much easier to load mags by hand opposed to the green ones which tilt everytime you insert a round

I got 10 gray MagPul. Are they gen II? How do you tell? I paid $100 for 10 brand new ones from MidWay.

Can someone explain to me what a proper "green" follower should be?

I noted at a recent gun show that there were at least two types of "green" followers available from a surplus dealer (all mixed in the the same bag.) One type looked a lot like a mag pull follower - except it was green - while the other "green" follower looked almost identical to the grey ones in my mil spec/mil contract magazines with the exception that the forward arm of the follower was triangular in shape.

I just grabbed a handful of them at $1.00 each and did not notice the difference until I got home.  I't possible there wwere even third and fourth types of green followers lurking in the bag as well.

Obviously, there is a lot more to it than the color. However I suspect when I replace my gray follwers with green ones, the mags will magically become more desireable regardless of what "green" follower is in them, just because they have a green follower.

EDIT:  The first type of green follower looks similar to the Magpull followers with an extended anti-tilt arm - "exactly like them" was a caffine deficient early morning mistatement - they do not have the 4 way anti-tilt feature.

I've had regular green follower tilt in real world use.  I've never heard of Magpul followers tiliting from anyone, nor have I seen it myself.  I've had green and black ones tilt in training numerous times, with the black ones being the worst.

Other people say they have never had any issues with any followers.   Perhaps they carry around a bit more luck than myself.

20 years ago when I was in the miltary, we normally avoided using 30 round magazines unless they were new or in like new/excellent condition as they were far more prone to feed problems than 20 round straight magazines.

Lately however, I have had very good luck with mil surplus 30 round mags - even those in average condition.  I suspect the feed lips are better made today than they were 20 years ago.   Also,  I suspect the generally tighter upper to lower recevier fit on my personal AR's improves relaibility.  Some of the miltary issue M-16A1's I used were impressive in terms of loose fit. Of course some of them were as old as I was as well.  At one point I had an XM-16 lower receiver and another time I had an XM-16E1.

I repalced all of my followers with MagPuls
Originally had blacks one (a few problems), went to USGI greens (no problems) now I am on the orange MagPuls (definitely noproblems).
You have a thousand dollar rifle what is another 2 bucks per Mag to know that your rounds absolutely will not tilt, FTF or double feed etc!

some upgraded mags, i finished last month I did 20 of them now in DuraCoat/Ranger plates/new springs & MagPul followers.
great investment

I’ve got piles of magazines with green followers and have never had any problems whatsoever. I’m just a keyboard commando and recreational shooter though.

I shot my fair share of blacks and greens, and witnessed thousands more in operation(Range Instructor)

To be honest, the problems I saw were related to bulged mags, broken springs, or not adjusted mag catches.

Can't really think of an instance where the follower made it malfunction, but I know it happens.

I have a bag full of green followers, removed ones.  I now have Magpul Gen I or Gen II followers in almost all of my mags.  I will have them in all my mags in a week.  No point taking a chance of a failure by tilt if I can avoid it.

My 7.5" SBR will not run using mags with black followers, but the green followers and the Magpuls work like a charm.

At a minumum go with the green followers, and get the Magpuls if you can.
