I have a mid length AR 16 inch and my wife wants a Car lightweight AR-15 in 16 inches (not an M-4 with the 2.5 inch FH).  I could not answer what the the difference was can someone tell me what the difference will be between the two uppers?

The CAR will have a different gas system, known as a Carbine gas system.  Also, the barrel will be lightweight which shaves a couple of ounces off of the government profile weight.  The mid length will has a Mid Length Gas System.

Do not forget the longer sight radius on the mid-length as the above photo also illustrates.

The CAR will have an 'sharper' recoil with the shorter carbine gas system and the lighter weight.  Much of that can be reduced using the PRI Fat Boy Gas Tube and/or a heavier buffer.

You're looking at a weight difference of approx:
4.4oz (LW vs Govt Profile mid-length)
or
19oz (LW vs HBAR mid-length)

(combination of barrel, gas tube and handguard)

Not to mention the weight centered a bit further out with the Mid-length (increasing what the barrel 'feels' like).

However, even that 4oz will be noticable.  My wife has issues with my stripped down M4 but no problems with the LW even though the weight difference is only a few ounces.
