I just picked up a Bushmaster M4 and on the first trip to the range I ran into a problem. When loaded with any Govt issue mag, I hit the bolt release to chamber a round and it jams. The round comes about half way out of the mag and stops. If I pull back on the T handle and let go it sends the round the rest of the way into the chamber. The only exception is when I use either of my 2 thermold mags. They work without a hitch. I don't have a clue of whats causing this. I'm hoping someone out there has had the same problem and knows a fix. Thanks in advance for any help.

How old/worn are the GI mags?  Did you clean the weapon a/p the -10?

Some were old, some were newer, one was new in wrapper. also I noticed that the bullets are getting scratched pretty bad getting into the chamber.

I have this problem with any D&H (bushmaster brand) mags until they are broken in.  Sharp feedlips.

When you say feedlips do you mean the feed ramp on the upper? The mags were Govt mags. They all feed fine in my colt SP1.

No - feedlips on the mags are sharp.

You could have some binding slowing the carrier down in your carbine, which is not apparent on your well broken in SP1.  Could be sharp feedlips on the mags.  Could be a bad buffer spring.

Is the weapon cleaned, and well lubricated with CLP only?

Does it only fail from the bolt release - and always cycle fine during live fire?

Gun is cleaned with clp. Once I get the round into the chamber it fires the rest of the mag. One 2 occasions it did FTF during a string of fire displaying the same symotoms. The round only making it out of the mag half way and stopping on the feed ramp. The thermold mags have no problems

I have had this problem recently with new CP products mags, a dry rifle, and wolf polymer steel case.

changing to brass cased ammo removed the problem.

changing mags reduced the problem but did not eliminate it.

cleaning and lubing the rifle eliminated the problem.

New mags and high friction ammo and a dry bolt/bolt-carrier leads to short stroking and the bolt jammed on a round that made it out of the mag, but not into the chamber.  The scratches on the round are from the bolt lugs, i believe.

As others said, lube your rifle.

Problem solved! After looking at the way the bullets were getting chewed up and getting stuck on the feed ramp, I decided to polish the ramps with a felt tip and compund on a dremmel. Cleaned out any residue with some gun scrubber and gave it a generous amount of CLP. Worked like a charm. Thanks again for all the help.

Had the same problem with a Bushy barrel.  There was a burr on one of the feedramps that was catching the round.

Yep, It did the trick. While pointing at a backstop, I fed 5 rounds manually by both letting the bolt release go and by pulling the T handle. I then examined the rounds and the scratches were gone.
