| I just got my CMMG barrel today and I left specific instructins to leave the taper pin loose but they did not. So in my attempt to remove the pins with a punch and hammer supported by 2X4's the pins will not come off and are now flared out. So now what. I smacked the pis out of these things and they never moved. I drove from left to right sighting down the barrel. Anyone have any ideas? thanks in advance |
If you have a bench vise and some small washers you can press them out. Put the small washers on the back side and use the vice jaws on the pin side. Use the vice as the press and you can usually push them out. Kroil or a good penetrating oil also helps. |
Sorry we missed that on the install. Would be happy to do the necessary dissassembly/assembly repark/replace(if necessary) for your build free of charge. At the very least shoot me an email and I will get some replacement pins heading your way. A small tapered finishing nail punch works better than anything. They dig in just right and don't seem to slip or cause flaring. |

Flat piece of steel or a bence that is SOLID a very small socket. Right, any dog gone socket will work as long as it just barely fits over the head of the taper pin. The Fat end, not the end that is getting the shit beat out of it. Get a friend, proper punch and a heavy hammer. The pins shrooming over is not critical. Have a friend put on some gloves and hold your barrel so that the socket is sitting on a flat surface and the front site base/barrel/whole upper, whatever the case may be, is supported by nothing other than the socket sitting over top of the the first pin to be driven out. basically the barrel is balancing on that socket with your friend stabilizing it. Then align your punch and WHACK the pin swiftly and firmly. Reset your punch and whack. It will come out. Almost 100% of that energy is driving that pin out. The socket is the key. Preferrably a 3/8ths drive and a socket size that just fits over the pin THE FAT END. You're GTG in about 5 minutes. |
If they came out on the ejection port side that would be left to right. I think he means sighting down the barrel as in like you were shooting the rifle. I hope so I am sitting here with a punch and hammer searching posts before my first attempt at removing one. I like the socket and the washer ideas. |
An easy way to remember this is that the pins should come out in the same direction that you move your pivot and takedown pins, left to right as you hold the gun to shoot it. |
+1 the type with the concave tip. If you use that and clamp down the barrel\FSB on something solid where it doesn't move\bounce around, removing the taper pins is pretty easy. You don't even need to whack the hell out of them like some people recommend. Just shoot CMMG an e-mail, they will take care of you. |
