I am a sheriff deputy in SOuth Florida.  I have $2000 to spend on an AR-15 of my choice.  I want a heavy barrel and top of the line weapon I can depend on.  I know nothing really of rifles (my specialty is handguns) can any one point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Colt. Go to the law enforcement section for starters.

$2,000.00 buys a lot of cool stuff too. Lots of dealers and LEO here who can give you some useful input. Try the Brothers Of The Shield forum.

I'm in patrol, and most of what I use my carbine for is clearing buildings, alleys, houses etc..  I started with a heavy barrel carbine back after I got out of the military, but switched later to a lighter barrel.  This allowed for much easier extended time with the weapon, especially when holding it one handed in a shooting position (opening doors, moving items, checking under beds etc).

Are you looking for a general purpose weapon, close quarters weapon, or distance weapon?  The answer will change what I would make as a recommendation.  Below is a picture of my pig, its shown without a light .  Feel free to IM or email me if you've got any questions.

Stay Safe.

Thanks for the info.  It will be mostly for longer range shooting - we don't train to enter / clear buildings with rifles in my agency.  Also for cover when tracking with a K9 unit.  My concern is the increase in hurricane activity here in West Palm and the need for extended ops once the area gets hit again by a major storm.  Last year we had two hurricanes, one right after the other and we worked for a few weeks straight.  I have looked at some of the "light" barrels and they seem awfully flimsy to me - maybe I am used to a shot gun barrel, but I would think a rifle barrel should be a little more solid feeling when holding it.
