changing front sight base? > AR Discussions

i have a Colt barrel with the bayo lug cut off and i want to change the front sight base to one with the bayo lug. i need to know the best place to send it to be changed. i need to keep the cost low but still get good work. Adco can do it for $75 including the new FSB and i know they do good work but if i can get the same quality of work and still save some money it will help keep my project on budget. i would even try to do it myself but i have been given the impression that instaling a new FSB is best left to a profesional. thanks.

Its next to impossible to put a new FSB in and have the hole line up I am supprised ADCO is charging so little. You are wasting your time trying to find a lower price, you wont find one.

i am always trying to save where i can but it sounds like ADCO is the place to send it to and at least i know it will be done right. thanks for your input Devl.

Their was a guy here on ar15.com, who was selling FSB with bayonet lug.
It bolted on with four allen head screws & used red loc-tite.

Mine hasnt moved since day one.

I will just let you know what Colt suggests. Each FSB is specific to its own barrel due to the machining process with the front and rear pins. Changing a barrel to a different front sight base is not suggested.

I will add that I know it is done. It is not even good to switch the front and rear pin on re-assembly of the same barrel and FSB. It may look like no big deal but it is very easy for your FSB to be mis-aligned by a few 1000/s that can really alter any possible future sight alignment.

Just my opinion, but it's not really worth messing with for a bayonet lug. Spend the money on ammo

I should raise the price, I'd rather people not send me the work!. I think its a HUGE waste of money, and it is a PITA.

I looked into switching a PRI flip front back to a regular FSB but I had mangled the original getting it off. In the end I just sold the old barrel and bought a new one. It was cheaper that way.

I suspect it is the YHM mount. This one cost me $75.

after looking at all the options i scrapped the idea of useing that barrel and bought one that left the factory with the lug. i doubt i will ever use it but i want my Colt M16A2 clone to be as accurate as possible. i must admit i find it kind of funny that with todays manufacturing being able to keep tolerances so tight that this poses the problem it does. i would think that they would be able to make them all the same so that you could swap them from rifle to rifle like you can with a barrel, trigger group, etc. apparently not. thank you for all your responses.

I know it's probably too late but Armalite sells a FSB that attaches with 2 cross bolts and is very sturdy, seems like it's around $40.00.

Its because there is no "spec" for the holes. If it was required it would not be the way it is but noone envisioned swapping FSB back in the day. I think you made the right choice.

And what do you gain.... the ability to add a bayonet? Now, I can see threading the barrel for a flash hider, or replacing a pinned CAR stock with a real one.
