I just picked this up today.  Any info you guys could give me would be great.  It was still in the box/plastic when i got it, never been fired.  The box says Colt Sporter Rifle.  R6721  .223.

The gun says Colt AR-15 A3,  Tactical Carbine Cal .223

I thought if it was a sporter it said sporter on the gun.  Also, i can't seem to find the gun anywhere on gunbroker or anything to get an idea of how much it's worth.  It's got the collapsable stock which came on it from the factory.  The gun was purchased in 1994.

Thanks

If you paid less than $1200 you got a good deal.

Nice looking rifle. Fairly rare in new in box condition and 12 years old.

actually, i got it for free.  My grandfather passed away and left it and a whole bunch of other good stuff for me.  He bought it and never fired, just collected.   Do these things run reliably or do i need to add/change anything?

All you need to add is bullets.

Great gift from Grandfather.

Nice gun.   I have a lower marked like that.  It will be a good rifle.  Cherish it.

Sorry to hear about your Grandfather.

That Colt has sat long enough unfired in the box.

If I were you, I would honor my Grandfather on his next birthday by firing off a 21 shot salute out of it. And then I'd dump a few mags thru it

Edited to add:

Obviously this is not your standard preban rifle. I doubt that I would shoot it after discovering its rarity. Your Grandfather left you piece of AR-15 history.

Is it marked Law Enforcement Only on the other side of the receiver?  If it isn't I believe those are worth quite a bit of Money for Colt collectors and fanatics ...

That would made a HUGE difference on what it is worth.

Also ... current 6721 are marked COLT DEFENSE not COLTS MFG ...

HAHA that is F'ing halarious, i didn't see my toes or stomach there.  They are only a little hairy also...

And no, nothing about law enforcement on the gun at all.

On 9/2894 my grandfather paid 650$ for it.  $689 including PA state tax.

I still have the receipt for it which was in the box with it.

I'm no expert ... but I think you are in possession of a $4,000 rifle ....     I would NOT shoot it if I was you  ... keep it new to hold it's value and keep the box ...  unless it's sentimental and you plan on never getting rid of it then fire away ....

Personaly, I would NOT fire it... That COLT is a collector not a shooter... Just my opinion, nothing more...

I can tell you that if my Grandfather had left me that rifle ... I would never sell it ... I would shoot it and take care of it until I gave it to my grandson ...

damn.  I dont know if i should be excited because i have an collectors gun or if i should be pissed because i dont have an AR15 to shoot now!

haha i think i'll be putting this thing back downstairs in my safe IN THE BOX and not touching it for awhile.  Damn it, now i have to go buy another AR.

I was getting all ready to buy a sling and more mags and stuff.  I guess i should be happy though.  How much will shooting it decrease the value of it you think?
6/4/2006 6:27:39 PM EDT

You have one of the famed 134 Colt R6721's that got out before the 1994 AWB.

Your Grandfather was a smart man, and will probably haunt your ass if you sell it.

Preserve this one, it IS a collector's item.  If you want a shooter, go buy a new production 6721.

I think if you keep it in the original condition that it was left to you in you will one day be glad that you did...

If you want a shooter, build a less expensive off brand copy for around $600 and have some fun...

ding ding ding

I highly advise that you do not shoot it.  Go buy another AR to shoot and have fun with.  If that rifle is UNFIRED, then it will grow in value much quicker than the Colt rifles that have had rounds through them.

my opinions, of course.

Yeah i'm going to shove that thing back in the box with the original plastic wrapper with the serial number sticker on the wrapper.  Everything is perfect condition, except i ripped the masking tape which closed the little baggie that the manual and cleaning brushes came in.  hopefully that wont bring down the value of it!!!!

Should i just pick up a bushmaster and beat the piss out of it? I'd like something to use for a tactical response training classes that will be reliable yet not cost more than say 900

That Colt is investment level collectable.  Don't shoot it.  Normally I would tell someone it's okay to shoot a gun that's already been fired... but if your Grandpa (Bless his soul) kept it unfired for so long, you should honor him and keep it unfired as well.

One day that could be a nice portion of a down payment on a house.  And in the world of firearms, older Colt SAA revolvers and pre WW2 military 1911's have gone up $100-$300 a year for the last 7 or 8 years in a row....  One day that AR-15 might appreciate just as much per year...

At first I thought your Grandfather smelled the coming AWB, and saw the value in stowing an AR15 away.

But that gun was purchased AFTER the ban went into effect.

Something curious about this.

Maybe he ordered it before the ban, and took delivery right after.

who knows.....

I will give you a brand new in the box Colt LE6920 for it if you are interested.

He really never even shot any of the guns he got.  He was a lawyer, did alot of law work for one of the larger distributors of firearms and gear in the country (which started off locally around near where i live).  When the place was small, the guy couldn't always pay him back for the lawyer fees, so he would give him guns.  He did that with alot of his clients.  He probably really had no intentions of even shooting it, just more of a collector.  Aside from shooting birds with a shotgun when he was younger, i'd say he probably shot his other guns 2-3 times in his life.

Nothing curious about it at all.

The ban didn't go into effect until 13 Sept 1994, so they were produced up to that date.  Inventories of pre-bans were still selling well after the date the ban went into effect.

Oh and I'm going to say "Shoot the Rifle if you want to".  It's a rifle, it was meant to be shot.  If you want to collect something that will take up space and collect dust, coins and stamps will do the same thing.  Rifles on the other hand are meant for shooting.
