Quick question, does the end of a gas tube need to be sealed or can it remain open?

Which end?  If you are talking about the end that mates with your bolt carrier in the upper receiver, it had better be open....

nope the very end that ends at the FSB, is it open or closed and can it be open or closed?

I stick peanutbutter in mine....   for storage.

Well I'm new at this, but I know the gas is supposed to go back towards the upper receiver. If the other end (at the FSB) is open, then that gas won't be able to back to the upper (that whole path of least resistance thing).

Doesn't that get messy?

On firing the first round, the peanutbutter somehow finds its way through the bolt carrier, then out the ejection port, then stings the crap out of you eyes.

Yup, almost like a soda straw...  There is no (close or off) switch.

In your original question, I'm guessing you were asking about the end of the tube that goes into the FSB, is that correct?   If so, the answer is: it needs to be sealed. The only hole should be in the side of the tube where it matches up with the hole in the top of your barrel. The other end (that goes into the upper receiver) is obviously open so the gas can blow back into your upper receiver.

Are you trying to make a tube from scratch, is that why you are asking?

As for the peanut butter in the eye deal. Have you tried one of those PRI peanut butter busters? I heard they work pretty well.....

Pfft, I find a slice of bread works just as well, especially when you use grape jelly instead of CLP to lube the rifle (make sure the bolt is dripping with the stuff)
