in movies you see when the guys go to reload, they grab a magazine and tap it on their helmet is that to make sure the mags loaded or just for shits and giggles?

It's to insure that the rounds are seated properly in the mag.

By tapping it on something (metal helmet, table at the shooting range, bottom of your boot, the palm of your hand, etc.), you might help align bullets that have moved slightly forward in the mag. It MIGHT help prevent a feeding issue with the first round.

Personally, I think it's a relatively minor risk, but it can't hurt to tap it once to try to seat the rounds better.

I've heard stories of people forgetting they didn't have a helmet on, and laying themselves out with a good thwack to the head...

I give them a firm smack on my palm.

I was always taught to tap it on my helmet to ensure proper seating of rounds. Use the palm of your hand if you don't have a helmet, but never do it with an AK mag! The spine on the back with hurt like a mutha.

I done this once but didnt lay me out, just hurt like hell. Funny thing is I rarely ever tap my mags like that.

Guilty. Did this with my first AR after I got out of the Corps. Hurt like hell.
