I just got off the phone with the VA. I was told that if you have been in the system since 1975 your name SSN and other info is the open.  The CD that was stolen from a VA employee contained all records of all personell in the VA system since 1975. Information other than SSN and full name are suspected to be codes that represent your records.

You can call any of the 3 major credit bureaus and have an "alert" put on your name.  If you try to open credit anywhere (Best Buy, any new credit card, 90-day same as cash guns, whatever) there are extra steps involved.  IIRC, one of these steps is that they creditor has to call you on the phone to approve.  It can be a pain, but it can save your tail.
