I have an older PWA Commando  with the A1 style upper, fixed carry handle. Is anyone running an aimpoint on the carry handle? DO they work OK or are they sitting pretty high? Pics would be great!

Have you also considered the Armson OEG as an option?

That's the original red-dot combat sight for the AR, and many versions are designed specifically to mount onto an AR carrying handle.  No batteries, used fiber-optic by day and tritium by night.

There are a couple websites (Optic Zone) that sell them for $145 or so, with the AR-mount being integral.  ARF member uxb and others have done writeups on the Armson OEG on this forum.

Just another possibility

wonder what date this was taken?

1) HSLD operator who prefers the traditional 'old-school" set up, with a touch of revolutionary new technology (for its time)

or

2) The Mk18 has yet to be intoduced

sorry for the temp hijack

Thanks, but I already have the Aimpoint. Just want to see if it is a "viable" option for this carbine.

Other than sticking ON TOP of the carryhandle (and having to deal with the large HOB).  You could use a goodneck type mount (like the Aimpoint version or the ARMS #39).  This would mount the Aimpoint over the handguards and give a much better trajecotry.

Or you could go with a rail system (preferably free-floated) and mount the optic to the rails:

If you are going to go that route [handle mounting] be sure that you pick up a CAR snap-on cheek piece for correct stock weld.  They are dirt cheap, fit very snug and consistantly in place.  Centerfire has them for about $13, and CTD  for $20.  Sometimes I think that my Commando with the cheek weld piece on the Generation 3 stock [pre-M4], A2 upper, w/ Red Dot handle mounted, and YHM rail system is the coolest most "bad" looking of all my ARs.  Yes, it is a hybred mongrel, but it looks "bad."  On the other hand, my flat-top A3 16" Med-HBAR with full rifle length YHM Free Float rail system plus K-grip and ACOG looks cool too.

That is a early as in circa 1986 XM4 Colt Model 720 with the old .625" barrel journal.  The optic/mount date from 1996 or so?  Odd combo.

I know! Looking at stickman's photos it almost feels like you can just grab the gun out of the screen and see how it handles.
