Have any of you heard of the PWi AR-15? A friend has one that was made from parts years ago and I was wondering if the company is still around. Basically, he wants to know if it's a pre 1986 gun or not, and if so how much it may be worth.

How sure is he on that last initial?

I confirmed. It's PWA, not PWI.

I've been running my PWA since 1982, taken it down many hundreds of times, and fired unknown tens of thousands of rounds. Built it long and heavy to super short and light.

It's tiny bit loose in the trigger/hammer pin holes, but still gages good.

Never fails to run. Couldn't tell you about worth, I bought mine...IIRC...for $50 back then.

Thanks. If this gun was produced prior to 1986, can he legally convert it to full auto? The serial number is 16XXX, so I know it was built before 94, but that's the only information I can find.

NOBODY CAN CONVERT ANY RIFLE FOR CIVILIAN USE TO "FULL AUTO."  IT IS NOT LEGAL TO DO SO.

Really, when it was made has absolutely nothing to do with it; unless it was ALREADY a REGISTERED machinegun prior to the ban taking effect, it cannot legally be made into a machinegun for civilian use.

I don't think anyone would even consider such an action.  Since the only legal customers for a newly made machinegun (new or conversion) are the military and law enforcement customers, and it's really easy for a manufacturer to make new machineguns, why bother converting anything?

Not legally, no.

Thanks folks.

I was unclear on the law with regard to pre-1986 guns so I'm glad I asked. I just knew that there were some pretty expensive AR's out there.
