Are you tapping them IN? If so, just tap them until about a 1/16" of an inch or so of the small end is sticking out of the FSB on the opposite side. It shouldn't take a lot of force, but as long as the FSB is fully supported, you can bang on them pretty hard.

Thanks for replying.  That sounds like good advice.  Probably not worth worrying about, but I got to thinking about how the tapered pins might act as wedges between the fore and aft sides of their grooves in the barrel, elongating the underside of the barrel at that point to bend it, or causing a stress riser that might make the groups string out.  Small beans, I know.
