I made some 6"x9" targets out of 5/8ths mild steel plate
to use as gongs for my varmint AR . I figured the 45gr
Win varmint HP's wouldn’t do that much damage to them at 100+ yards .

I was wrong .....

45gr HP's traveling at 3600+ FPS will make 1/2" deep holes in mild steel @ 100 yds

At 50 yds or closer, I bet they would have gone through.  I must say, I am surprised the 45gr varmint rounds will do that.... givent their jackets being thinner than M193.  Shows how velocity plays a role in hard cover penetration.

I'd like to see a side by side comparison of mild steel thicknesses.... and different 5.56 rounds, along with 7.62x39.

I mostly shoot gallon jugs and 20 oz water bottles, some steel and clay birds.  Here is a 3/8" plate I shot with a .450 Marlin and an AR.  You can actually see the spin of the .450 bullet on the back.

I've got a related question... I am thinking about building a bullet trap like the one on this website:

www.reloadammo.com/backstop.htm

I would be shooting at 50-100 yard range.  How thick of a piece of steel would I need for the backstop?  I would be shooting non-steel core ammo.

I have a backstop like this at 75 yards, using Hornady 55 gr. Blitz (their non-ricochet bullet) @ 2900 fps hand loads, it eats up a 3/8" steel plate.  expends all its energy where it hits and drives through the steel. Best have a really good area behind your backstop.  Standard AK-47 rounds dimple the steel, 45's, 9mm, .357 Mag don't bother it at all. Really surprized me as the military 223 rounds didn't dimple it and they did drive into the ground under the stop.   Just a little something to keep in mind.     Jer

Another Link For Targets.....

MGM Targets are well made.  And not too expensive when you consider the price includes shipping.

Anybody thinking of making their own steel targets should read these two pages on his site:

Target Repair Information

I have made many steel targets and have one that is made of AR500 for the rifles..

Here are the pistol targets..
The one on the left is made up of 3/8 mild steel plate and works very well for pistol rounds.. They do get a little bent up tho..

The one on the right is has 1/2" plate and bearings so it spins rather well.. It is a fun to get 2 people on that one..  Try to keep it spinning your way..

http://w-a-w.net/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core:DownloadItem&g2_itemId=7723&g2_serialNumber=2

I also have a 10" AR500 Gong for the rifles. It works very well and has great sound. I was able (Didn't mean too) to shoot holes in it tho. :(  I was shooting 22-250 varmint @ 100 yards and I guess it got jammed and couldn't swing.. Well even TNT's at 4000 fps will go through 3/8 armor plate if it can't move.

.223 and .308 vs. 3/8" mild steel bunny target...

A variation or what I'd call an improvement on an idea gleened from the Maryland ar15 shooters site...

An upright 1x3.
A stolen plastic milk crate.
An idpa or ipsc cardboard target. Or better still, a piece of that corrigated plastic sheet used for signs cut into the shape of the ipsc/idpa target.  This is what I use... It's heavier and falls faster.. Also it's more rigid.
A couple flex-cuffs or "zip ties"
A bag of party baloons..

Crate serves as a base
Screw 1x3 upright onto crate.
Flex cuffs hold target to 1x3 and guide it as it falls.... keeps it from moving side to side in the breeze.
baloon keeps the target in place.
Hit the baloon... target drops like a sack o' bricks.

I hope you move the car before shooting at those hen
If you have a big freezer with room in it you can take 5 gallon buckets or smaller ones, fill them with water and freeze them.  The ice reacts a lot like glass when it's hit but there is nothing to clean up afterwards.

Sound like you have a lot of experience.... ut this sounds weird.  True AR500, with a 22-250 at 100yds?  I would think that would be a tiny dimple at WORST.  Is there that much difference between 22-250 velocities and .223 that it would make a world of difference on hardened armor plate at 100yds?  My M193 and M855 barely makes a mark on my steel at 100.

Yeah I thought AR500 was tougher than that.  Although, .mil 5.56 ammo isnt moving at 4000 fps.
The more FPS...the more HEAT...the more heat, the more damage it'll do to the steel.

Plus, the plate was stuck.  That would make a big difference...wouldnt it?

Either way, I want a few pieces of AR500...anyone know a place to buy them?  Are they rare/hard to find?

I've seen vendors on Ebay that have a tagline that says they'll cut any shape and any quantity of AR500 steel.  My main concern is how much it would cost to ship steel.

My advice is contact steel companies in your area and ask if they can plasma or laser cut customer drawn shapes or designs in AR500 steel.

Charcoal briquttes work well, and so does a small cardboard box filled with expanding foam.
