it can't be illegal, at least i don't see how.. The part willnot make the weapon fire full auto which would make it a crime...

This topic has been here multiple times since i've been on here, but i cna't remember if there was ever a definitive answer.. I do believe it's the same thing as the /airquote/ enhanced bolt carriers.

EDIT: Damnit I was too slow

thanks for the reference dpmmn, but we can now call that public domain even if its in my photobucket

Plus, I had to have gotten it somewhere .

There is a reference to this subject at the ATF web site, but you have to cyber-navigate a few sub-pages to find it

IIRC, it appears on a Form 5503 or something like that

Off to find it............

Jeez! I cannot believe what a tangled web of legal-eze, mumbo-jumbo, cockamamey, CharlieFoxtrot that place is (BATF)

Its a small wonder guns are legal at all if you read half that mess...

This comes up once a week or more. We really need to tack a thread with the title

"You can legally use an M16 carrier in your AR15"

It would help, as this really comes up a lot.

BUT it could vary based on state law. Some states (WA I believe) say that even one part from a full auto gun is illegal.

You better write Colt and tell them to stop selling their AR's with that M16 carrier...

Thanks for the responses, I just wanted to make sure it was legal before I ordered a m16 carrier. Having an ATF letter is a saftey aginst some rookie ATF field agent or police. Your right this topic should be put in the important threads, along with the letter.

Yeah like this one:

www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=6&t=147440

Which is 14 pages of discussion on this very topic, and is TACKED at the top of the legal forum, which was created for legal questions and issues?

Wrong, it's only illegal if the part is intended for use in a machine gun. In a legal rifle, you can use it. Our state sucks for NFA stuff..

The noted ATFE letter was first posted by team member CJan_NH who was a former Colt employee and related to Mr. Carlton S. Chen of Colt Defense.

It was posted around Spring/ Summer last year and should be in the archive. I also have a full size copy of the letter.

I use Colt and LMT M16 BCG in my rifles now but never had any problems with the semi auto type in the past.

For those of you who bought Colt LE models with M16 BCG in a ban state send it to me, I'll even pay for shipping.

Great. Now that that's settled once again. Where can I get one now?

Denny has some CMT M16 carriers. They are very nice. Might as well pick up an MP tested bolt while you're at it.

Don't use any surplus A1 buttstocks either, they came off full auto M16s.

I would recommend industry partner Jim of Police Supply if you want to get a Colt brand.

You could contact him in the Industry or Equipment Exchange, his handle name is GunDealer3, great guy to deal with and fast shipping.

For other brands contact any one of our industry partners like G&R Tactical, JTAC Supply, ADCO etc.

Good luck.

Thanks. I'll give Denny a look. Yes I need a CMT bolt assy too.

I tried to get an M16 carrier a year ago but struck out everywhere. Ended up with a "C" carrier from SAW which I may use someday. My 2nd build has slowed down to crawl due to lack of funding, but I think it's time to get a carrier and bolt(s).

So, what's the advantage to the semi-auto rifle owner to have a M-16 carrier instead of a AR-15 carrier? Is there some sort of shortage of the AR-15 part? Is the AR-15 carrier more expensive?
Link Posted: 1/10/2006 2:57:34 PM EDT
M16 carrier has more mass (helps with extraction timing on carbines), it is also fully shrouded (to protect the firing pin/retainer). The M16 carrier is what was intended, not that neutered red headed aberation that an AR15 carrier was/is.
