This may have been asked a ton of times or might sound like a dumb question to some but I've had it asked of me countless times unable to reply. I did some research online and also couldn't find anything.

What is the difference between an AR15 and an M16?

Weren't the first M16's and some of the M16-A1's marked AR-15 on the lowers? I'm not certain but I could almost swear that the A1 I had in the MD NG was marked that way.

So there is no such thing as a fully auto AR-15?

So, are these major changes? Could you tell the difference by a glance? What's the bolt carrier/auto sear/disconnector?

When I was in the AF 87-91 ALL of our M16s were marked Colt AR15.   All had the happy switch as well so YES THERE ARE FULL AUTO AR15s!!!

The generally accepted definition though would have the AR15 as a semi auto version of the M16.

Colt sold factory full auto AR15s.  AR15 is by gerneral knowledge a semi auto M16 variant sold to the commercial punlic.  Like Kleenex is ANY tissue sold whether its a name brand or not.  AR15 is a COlt trademark they use on MOSTLY semi auto M16 variants sold to the public but has been used in the past on factoty full autos sold to the public before they were banned.

When people say AR15 vs M16 they usually dont mean Colt products sold to civilians but some other Colts as well vs. Govt issues weapons from Colt and FN they mean semi auto vs fully auto.

M16 is the military's designation for the AR15 rifle manufactured to their specifications, the full auto ability being one of them...
