How about foreward positioned Sten magazines like the Olympic Arms system uses?
Bob |

Sten mags are our number one choice for the 9mm magwell. It is slated to be the first 9mm option. As to the exact position of the mag in the magwell, I don't have that information at this time. |

Thought you might like to know there is at least one arfcom group buy MGI RRB in Iraq. I have it in my M4A1. Works great, especially on full auto.
Thanks for the report from the sandbox, MarkJ!!!!!!
Yes, there are many many MGI RRB buffers in use over there in the Iraqi/Afghanistan theater. Our troops deserve to have the best! |
Does this mean that they'll have a high shelf i.e. not rDIAS ready without a trip to a machine shop? I was hoping to use one as the host to a rDIAS. |
I'll have to check on that for you, and report back. |

I'm curious. Why the Sten magazine? I know they are cheap and plentiful, but the single feed means it is harder to load and more susceptible to jamming. Are Uzi mags that much more expensive?
This is a similar issue that was raised earlier about the Thompson mags in 45ACP. It is entirely possible, and even likely, that there will be more than one magwell in each of these pistol calibers. Uzi and others are under consideration too, for 9mm magwells. We will continue to release new magwells as we go along. There are alot of possibilities for this, but we can only do a certain amount of things at a time. This stuff gets expensive to make, and we need to get some of it moving, so we can continue development of additional options. Basically, I guess you could say that we have to start somewhere, and these have been decided upon to start with. |

Sorry, I was using thypcal AR15.com forum jargon. The "EE" is the Equipment Exchange section of the AR15.com website, and are the forums where the buying and selling of guns and equipment is done on this website. Prices are not posted yet, because I haven't been cleared by the factory to put the ad up yet. I'm expecting to be able to place the ad this week. |

I cant wait to get one of these. anyword on the carbon fiber upgrade for the MGI uppers?
This may have been addressed already, if so, my bad. Since this lower is in two pieces, which piece will have the serial number (registered part)? I am assuming that the grip/FCG part will be serialized as it wouldn't make much sense to have to transfer each individual magwell through an FFL. Unless of course there is some legal restriction on which part has to be considered the registered part.
The rear section of the receiver, carrying the trigger group, will be the serialized part. The magwells are not serialized. This has already been ATF approved. Excellent question! |
Sweet Tom! Now I need to start saving my money for a QCB upper and modular lower.
Any progress with AA on a Grendel option? |
Yes! As I announced on another thread, Advanced Barrel Systems(ABS) has received the licensing paperwork form Alexander Arms for producing 6.5 Grendel barrels. After a lengthy conversation with Bill Alexander the other day, they are happy to allow ABS to make barrels for MGI and for MGI to use those barrels in caliber conversion packages for the MGI QCB. This means regular match barrels, OR carbon fiber match barrels, from ABS will be available for the MGI QCB system. We can also procure bolts and mags from sources recommended by Bill at AA. It will take a couple of weeks for the paperwork to be finalized, and reamers ordered. We are just full of exciting news, on all fronts now, it seems! |
I'm excited to get a magwell swapping receiver and get it SBR'd.
That will be awesome. keep up the good work! |
Sweet! I was going to buy an AA "Hunter" upper in 6.5 Grendel for deer, but maybe I'll buy a QCB upper and a 6.5 Grendel barrel and bolt instead. How much does the QCB upper weigh? Does AA open up the ejection port on 6.5 Grendels? Or are they standard? I thought I remembered reading something about that. |

this is turning out to be an erector set for grownups.
I think the upper itself without BCH is 26 OZ. How much does the lower weigh compared to a standard one, with the AR magwell and the AK magwell? Will Standards and aftermarket triggers fit? Are you guys going to supply the rest of the parts for caliber conversions, 9mm and 22lr for example or will off the shelf parts for one work with your lower/magwells and the QCB upper? Since you are making lowers, are you guys going to produce complete guns/kits where a person could spend a wad of dough and get a gun with extra barrels, caliber conversion parts, magwells, etc at one shot? I could see a carbine with a conversion kit to 22lr being a hot ticket. My wallet is beginning to smolder. |
Probably was addressed somewhere and I missed it.
I assume the FFL lower doesn't have a caliber marked on it since there are so many options for magwells and uppers? |
Hi Yeki, The lower will weigh very close to the normal weight of an AR15 lower, because the only difference is the small added amount of aluminum in the dovetail joint. Everything else is just the same as a normal AR15 lower. We kept the same dimensions and all, and just added the joint support area. I think with the AK magwell, the weight will be lower than that of an AR15 lower. For 9mm and 22lr, we will have conversion parts available, or you can buy other brands. While the 10/22 magwell has not been created yet, regular 22 conversion kits can be used in our AR15 magwell, and QCB upper as they are now. I don't know if there will be anything special needed for the 10/22 magwell use yet. Standard lower parts kit and fire control groups are used, and the interior dimensions of the fire control group pocket are the same as normal AR15, so aftermarket parts should work fine. Yes, ultimately we will produce full MGI Modular guns, which can be bought with manybarrels and magwells, and will include our other good stuff, like the RRB buffer and D-Fender in them. And they will also be available with our upcoming MGI Midlength barrel package, with flip-up FSB and gas regulator. We have even contemplated packaging the complete gun in an aluminum briefcase, taken down and fitted into foam liners. Sort of "James Bond" like. |
The caliber is marked "Multi" on the rear portion of the reciver. Each magwell will be marked for the type of mag and primary calibers intended for it. |
Griz, It is a high shelf lower, and is not cut for DIAS use, but an end user can have it machined for DIAS, if he desires. |

Jeremy, The carbon fiber FF tube is still on hold, because Mike at ABS can't get to it because he's so busy making barrels. It may be awhile. We are looking at some other handguard options that you might like, but the one under consideration now, is not going to be a retrofittable option. Mike's carbon FF tube would be retrofittable, and when he finally gets to finishing up the prototype, we'll make it available for that purpose. Some of this stuff is just out of my control. I'm at the mercy of the makers. |

So, are the interchangeable magwell lowers available for purchase yet? I emailed the factory about a week ago, but I have not yet received a response. It would be nice to be able to get one of these stripped lowers here in CA ASAP before the CA DOJ gets around to adding them to the AR/AK make and model roster (if they ever do, that is).
What keeps the magwell from sliding off the rear part of the receiver? If the lower is built with a pinned magazine for use as a CA-legal fixed-magazine rifle, will the thing fall apart when the upper is hinged open for reloading, or is the magwell secured in place by something other than the hinged trigger guard and the front receiver pin? |
At this time, the company is still working on whether the MGI Modular Lower receivers will be available for shipping to California.
They are not currently available in "stripped lower" format, and I am waiting for a determination on whether this product will be available to California. They are currently available to the rest of the country that has unrestricted access to this type of product. It may yet be determined that we can do somthing in California, but no final word on that has reached me as yet. |

Tom,
Any chance you can post some pics of how your detachable mag well lowers work? How solid is the lock up? Thanks |
Cool, I was wondering about that. |

Well, we have finally gotten all the red tape finished, and I am now proud to officially post with the words "Industry Partner" under my moniker!
There are still a few kinks to work out before we get our own forum on the Industry page, but that should be happening very soon. We're happy to increase our support of ARFcom, and we love it here! PS- We're still moving along with production of the 2nd run of Modular Lower Receivers, and the new version of the QCB upper. We'll see them both sometime this month. |
